My Fascination
with Samhain
Samhain. Halloween. All Hallow's Eve.
Whatever you wish to call it, it is a night that holds much mystery,
and carries with it feelings of evil, terror, dread. The ghouls and
ghosts are supposed to come out on this day, the dead walk about, and all
Hell Breaks Loose. Well, some dispute this, saying that the pagan holiday
called Samhain (sow-in) was a time of celebration of the final harvest. I
cannot accept that as true, since there is no evidence to support or dispute
that. There is, in fact, little known about exactly what these Celts
did, especially their pagan holidays. So, I am not here to tell you
what it was or that it was good or evil, simply to tell you that I find it
awe inspiring. The terror you feel as you walk through the woods on
the way home from Trick or Treating is uncomperable. So enjoy the links
below.
I
have always had some sort of weird attraction to the supernatural and the
undead. These subjects never fail to hold my attention, and I have spent
countless hours reading various books and watching things on TV. I'm not
some freak who thinks I am a Vampire, but it does capture the imagination
a bit, doesn't it?
I cannot help but to link together the supernatural with Halloween, I can
only blame society. So I have also begun studying the origins of Halloween
(Samhain) and Celtic culture in general. It doesn't hurt that one of my all
time favorite bands is SAMHAIN, does it? Anyways, opinions vary as to whether
Samhain (pronounced sow-in) is an evil holiday or not. Anyone telling you
that it is or isn't is full of, well, you know... But they cannot be sure
since there really isn't muc to base that sort of FACT on, only an opinion.
It is my opinion that it is evil, or at least favors the darker side of life.
Have you ever been out on Halloween, running around in your little innocent
childish way, and felt the chill of the dead walk down your spine? I have,
and it has always filled me with a mix of terror and anticipation.
So, below are various links where those of you who wish to know more, or
simply share my twisted fascination with this holiday, may go. Enjoy these
links, and the next time you are home alone, in front of the computer, turn
out the lights, dim the monitor, and delve into the darker side a while.
You may find the fright you so dearly need.
