The Sandwich Generation,© definition:
- Traditional: those sandwiched between aging parents who need care and/or help and their own children.
- Club Sandwich: those in their 50s or 60s, sandwiched between aging parents, adult children and grandchildren. OR Those in their 30s and 40s, with young children, aging parents and grandparents.

- Open Faced: anyone else involved in elder care. (Term coined by Carol Abaya)
Carol Abaya, M.A., is a nationally syndicated newspaper
columnist and nationally recognized expert on the
sandwich generation, aging and elder/parent care issues.
She was a regular expert guest on The Payoff Years radio
programs, a special pilot series of programs geared to those 45+.
Ms. Abaya has been featured in The New York Times, the
Wall Street Journal, Kiplingers Retirement Report, and
New Choices magazine. She has appeared on
The Phil Donahue Show, Ernie Anastas Talk Show,
CNN and FNN. She has been honored by the U.S.
Department of Labors Womens Bureau and New Choices
Magazine for her work with aging issues. AARP also recognizes
her as expert on sandwich generation issues.
