Santa Fe County Trends for Alcohol-Related Crash Injuries

Practically every day brings another alcohol-related crash injury to Santa Fe County, averaging six persons injured per week. There has been no trend toward reduction over the past five years. Of the 325 injuries reported to police for 1997 alcohol-related crashes:

  • 86 were reportedly incapacitating
  • 94 produced visible injuries
  • 145 were complaints
  • 550 more people were involved in reported alcohol-related crashes in Santa Fe County during 1997 but said at the crash scene that they were not hurt.

5,500 people have been involved in Santa Fe County alcohol-related crashes in 1992-1997. 86 of them died, and another 2,071 were injured.

The reliability of reporting alcohol involvement in crashes can vary from place to place, and from time to time, as it involves judgment by officers and policy issues determined by law enforcement leaders. Reporting alcohol involvement is fairly consistent, though, for more severe crashes. National studies show police tend to under-report involvement.

Santa Fe County Trends for Alcohol-Related Crash Deaths

Alcohol-related crash deaths in Santa Fe County have not been on the decrease. The County has not experienced the sustained reduction observed statewide after the 1993 state DWI law reforms. In 1997, eleven persons were killed in ten separate alcohol-related fatal crashes in Santa Fe County.

Alcohol involvement is very reliably reported for fatal crashes in New Mexico, with careful case-by-case follow-up with the state Scientific Laboratory, the Office of the Medical Investigator, and law enforcement actions. The same reporting methods have been in place for several years, so figures are very consistent from year to year.
