There are lots of wedding customs and practices in use today that arose from various cultures. Many couples often wonder where these traditions come from and what are approriate for todays weddings. Listed below are a few historical facts and some links to specific wedding customs.
The term "Wedding" in Anglo-Saxon literaly meant the purchase of a bride for breeding purposes, and the actual word "wedding"comes from a root word to gamble or wager.
Diamond engagement rings were given by medieval Italians because of their belief that the diamond was created from the flames of love.
A veil originated from the custom of an arranged marriage when the father gave the bride away to the groom, who lifted the veil to see her for the first time.
Ancient Greek soldiers were the first to hold stag parties. The groom would party with his male friends on the night before the wedding, saying goodbye to bachelorhood and swearing continued allegiance to his fellow warriors.
