Course Comments for The Florida Club This course has water on about half of its holes but it is more noted for some very large waste bunkers. At least 7 holes have waste bunkers that are in excess of 100 yards long that run parallel to the fairways. The #9 and #15 holes have waste bunkers that run the entire length of the hole. As is the case at the PGA Dye Course you can drive your cart into most of these waste bunkers; they also serve as cart paths. Incidently Dick Gray, the course architect, was a protege of the famous Pete Dye who designed the PGA Dye Course. If you've played both courses you will no doubt see some similarities on a few of the holes. This course measures 6792, 6310, 5865 and 5497 yards from 4 sets of mens' tees and 4988 yards from the ladies' tees. Greens were only about average in quality when we played here in July 1999 when we paid about $26 for 18 holes with a cart but in all fairness to this course, this was immediately after about 2 weeks of solid rain that happened in late June of that year. Five or six real pretty holes on this course. The #8 hole is a 529 yard dog-leg left par-5 with water on the left that is certainly reachable in 2 by better golfers (because I came within 15 yards myself) except that the fairway narrows significantly as you get closer to the green. The #18 hole is a challenging dogleg-left par-4 ranging from 395 to 472 yards requiring a reasonably long shot over water to the final green. There are at least 3 other dogleg par 4's on this course. In August 2000 we read an interesting article in one of the local newspapers that a local farmer whose property abuts one of the Florida Club fairways was raising a large number of hogs on his property and was playing loud music for them to keep them happy. The golf course was seeking legal action to have him and his hogs removed but was only successful in getting the music stopped. We last played here in July 1999 and didnt notice this. We never did hear the final outcome of this humorous story. One of you reported in October 2000 that this course was in mediocre shape but didn't mention the farmer. Handicaps ranged from 4 to 20 in the group. The first hole fooled us all because we thought it would be an easy course...however, we all enjoyed the course and the club house and are intending to play again soon. Posted by: t. mcrae lansing, MI on: Dec 15, 2007 at: 13:15 We played on 12/8/2007 and paid $30.00 using vouchers from another website. They had a $25.00 special for play beginning after 1:30. The course was in great shape and the greens ran true and fast. The course was fairly open and is what I think of as a "Florida" course - fairly flat and open, lots of sand, some water but few forced carries. This is a great value. Also, we had time to play another 9 holes and they only charged us a $10.00 cart fee. Highly recommend this course. |
