Course Comments for Gator Trace This course was designed by a well known architect named Arthur Hills in the early 1980's. I had previously played this golf course in summer 1999 and was not at all pleased with the deplorable condition of the course. Back then, the greens on this course were the worst Florida greens that I had ever seen and I swore that I would never go back. Fortunately around Thanksgiving of 2001 a friend asked me to join him there for a round and I'm very glad that he did because I have to say that this golf course has vastly improved. Although still one of the shortest golf courses on the list at 6092, 5530 and 4573 yards from the blue, white and red tees respectively, I have to say that Gator Trace no longer ranks in the absolute bottom slot of golf courses on this list. That honor now goes out to Indian Pines, in my opinion. In terms of overall course quality I would rank it in the same class as the Martin County Red/White Course and the Club Med Sandpiper. The few times I have discussed this course with the locals, most of them cautioned me about the narrowness of this course. I have to say that aside from the 5 consecutive doglegs on the first five holes, I didn't particularly feel that there was a lack of landing room on most of the holes. At least I didn't feel all that compelled to leave my driver in the bag, or perhaps I'm just getting better and straighter. After those 4 dog-legs right and 1 dog-leg left that you'll experience in the first 5 holes you won't see another one until #18. All of the other holes are straight shots. Kind of a strange design. There's water on perhaps 15 of the holes and a fair number of traps. And yes, there are gators on this course. I've seen them, lots of them. I have played here as cheaply as $15 for 18 holes with a cart during the summer months a few years ago and don't think I've ever paid more than about $21 to play here even in late fall. Nice little clubhouse and upstairs bar/restaurant at this course where they serve good food on Friday nights so I am told. This course advertises its specials very, very often in the Fort Pierce Tribune sports section. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the most recent comment. Given that this is at the end of 'The Season' I have always found the course to be in reasonable nick. The design is not conventional but what's wrong with a little character? For the purists this comment may seem flippant, but for an inexperieced golfer like myself with a high handicap this course is adequate but more to the point welcoming and friendly. Posted by: atomictim@sbcglobal.net on: Dec 20, 2005 at: 09:23 I have just had the pleasure of shooting 9 holes with my wife at Gator Trace. We had an early morning tee time and were behind only four other groups. We arrived at the signature hole (hole #9)a par three which carries over the lake surrounded by bunkers. Wow what a dream for a cozy private community course. And one more thing, where can you get a delectible prime rib lunch for only $8.95! I recommend this course to anyone who loves to play without being rushed. Posted by: white90@llnl.gov on: Dec 20, 2005 at: 09:28 Spent some time with the family last spring. My uncle asked if I cared to shoot a round. Gator trace was affordable enough but I wondered about the course conditions. This course was extremely well groomed and had a wild life effect throughout the fairways which was cool. I shot par manily due to the course being reasonably easy and had a great time, a do over in my book. Posted by: Linda on: Feb 22, 2008 at: 12:11 Played this course twice Feb 2008. Green fees for two with tax included $78.81. We liked it. Red tees are pretty short, so the second time we were there I played from the whites. |
