Course Comments for the Links at Pointe West This is one of the 2 newest golf courses on this website, built about the same time as Saint James. I played this course for the first time on 6/28/02 for $25 for 18 with a cart. That is a weekday/summertime price. On weekends in summer it is $30 to tee off before noon, $25 on weekends after noon. (This is the price for everyone - not a coupon deal). I agree with Trevor's comments below about this not really being a Scottish links style course. There is water on nearly every hole, however many of the ponds are just scenery and don't come into play. It really is more of a typical FL course. I personally would liken it most to Cobblestone because of the abundance of water on the course. So much water that on a hot June day I wished I'd had a small boat to cool off with. When I say Cobblestone I mean Cobblestone without the pinetrees. When I played in late June 2002 the entire area had been saturated with over a foot of rain during 2 of the previous 3 weeks. I purposely avoided playing Pointe West for a while because I was aware that many of the courses from Vero on up north were saturated. On the day that I played it was cart-path only and I can understand why because it was mushy in many places. About the same kind of watery experience I had playing The Habitat a year earlier after some heavy rains. Nearly every hole had had its fairways aerified. There were sod-plugs laying everywhere. That's not a knock on this course. It's a necessary maintenance that has to be done to all Florida courses usually June or July. Almost all of the greens also had been recently aerified. The holes left behind along with the sand that they sprinkle on the greens left them very bumpy and difficult to putt. There is a significant amount of undulation in almost every fairway on this course. But I must say that the greens are quite level. Under more optimal conditions I'm sure these greens are a joy to putt on. Trevor mentions the gimmicky par-4's. There's also two very weird par-5's on the back nine. First #10 which is a dramatic dog-leg left par-5 around/over a fairly large lake reminiscent of Cobblestone's #18. Then there's #16 which is a straight-ahead par-5 with 2 big trees right in the middle of the fairway that come into play from most of the tees. Then there's a second cluster of perhaps a dozen or more Spanish Moss covered trees 100 yards from the green that you want to be either beyond or aside of after your second shot. These are also situated right in the middle of the fairway. To me the toughest hole has to be #12, a long dogleg left par-4 around a lake. Just trying to aim your drive at the proper angle to carry the lake and make the narrow fairway is tough enough. Fade it just a tad and you can kiss a green in regulation goodbye because of an extra long 2nd shot. Hook your drive just a tad and you are almost certainly in the water. This course has 5 sets of tees measuring from 7002 yards down to 5161 yards for the ladies. It is a semi-private course that anyone can play and they also offer "daily-fee" golf if you wish to play more than 18 holes. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the most recent comment.
