Course Comments for Sandridge G.C. Dunes Course

We played all 36 holes at Sandridge here one day in July 1999. For some strange reason the folks at Sandridge may have mis-named the 2 courses here. We found that the back nine of the Dunes Course and the front nine of the Lakes Course had some very expansive sand traps and waste bunkers, and it was these specific 18 holes that more closely resembled a true Scottish Links course. On the other side of the coin, we found that the front nine of the Dunes Course had plenty of water and more closely resembled the back nine of the Lakes Course which also has lots of water. We were beginning to wonder if some vandal had maybe switched the tee signs around. This course is way out in the country about 5 miles north of Vero Beach and is teeming with wildlife. Just about anything from gators to herons to wild pigs to deer can walk out in front of you on these fairways. The only bad thing that can be said about this course is that the green surfaces were a little worse than average compared to other courses in the area at least for the summertime. The Dunes Course measures 3435 yards from the longest tees on the front nine and 3402 yards from the longest tees on the back nine for a total of 6837 yards max. We found the front nine of the Dunes to be especially narrow. The shorter blue tees will have you playing 6079 yards. The 2 courses at Sandridge Golf Club are 2 of only 4 decent courses in the Vero Beach area which are open to the public (the others being Dodger Pines and The Links at Pointe West) so these courses get a lot of action particularly in the mornings even in the summer. A lot of seniors play these courses then so look for play to be a little slow in the morning but it usually opens up well in the afternoon. Just under $30 per man to play all 36 holes here with a cart in July 1999. If you want to play just 18 in the summer, it's closer to $20. They only charge you a cart fee if you want to play the extra 18. For the money this is one of the best values in the area. It's been a few years since I've had a chance to play here and I don't know if the greens have improved, but that aside, in my opinion the back nine of the Dunes Course and the front nine of the Lakes Course are the most scenic consecutive 18 holes of golf that you will play anywhere on the Treasure Coast. For a true "links experience" try playing just those 18 holes sometime if they will let you. These courses were designed by Ron Garl who also designed the Martin County Gold/Blue Course.

I played here on 7/5/02 for the first time in 3 years and the course was in fantastic shape. The shabby greens that I experienced 3 years ago are history. The greens have obviously been redone. Everything I said about the scenery that begins on #10 of Sandridge Dunes is still true. Except it actually begins with hole #11 on the Dunes Course. After 10 "drab" or average holes that you start out on at Sandridge Dunes you cross over a bridge and a small canal that literally takes you to a different world. At #11 you quickly shift from a typical Florida type course onto an almost Arizona-like golf course that has a real desert feel to it with totally different foliage. Quite a shift. To play 18 holes here with a cart it's $18 including tax. I opted to play all 36 this day and they charge you an additional cart fee of $12.84 to do that. The only bad thing about this course is they won't let you skip the first 9 holes at the Dunes and start on number 10.

Again in 2003 this course along with Fairwinds and The Links at Pointe West was chosen to host the Florida State High School Championships, boys and girls.

Just played yesterday for the first time at this course. I heard good things about it, but find that it's not all that great. The drive paths are mostly dirt roads. There are some nice holes but overall it's just average. I thought the Fairwinds and Pointe West was better.
