Course Comments - The Savannahs at Sykes Creek GC, Merritt Island
Do not confuse this golf course with Savanna Golf Club in Port St. Lucie which is an 18 hole Par-61 executive course measuring only 3792 yards. That Savanna contains no 'h'. I played the Savannahs for the first time on 7/9/02 and found it to be quite a flat course. The summertime rate for after 2:30pm was $16.96 including tax. It's about $12 more to tee off before 2:30. I don't think it's as nice a course as Brevard County's sister course, The Habitat. It was designed by Gordon Lewis and was built in 1991. It has 4 sets of tees measuring from 6507 yards for the men down to 4592 yards for the ladies. What I noticed about this course is its unusually small greens on about 6 or 7 of the holes. One hole in particular, the #7 hole, a long par-5 which is the #1 handicap hole, had a very small, hard-to-hit green. The strategy on this par 5 is not to lay up with an iron on your second shot. Pull out your most accurate long iron or fairway wood and try to get it down the left side of the fairway to take the lake that guards the right side of the green out of play for your approach shot. Another real interesting hole is #4, a double dogleg par-4 (the #3 handicap hole) that forces you to land your tee shot on a narrow stretch of fairway that doglegs left from the tee and then doglegs right around a marsh on the right. If you play from the blue tees (not the shortest for men) you must not fade your tee shot at all. If you do, you lengthen your approach shot to the point where the green can be unreachable even with your best fairway wood. Another postage stamp sized green here. This course features a few picturesque holes, one in particular being the #16 hole with Spanish Moss covered trees on your right and large waste bunkers. This is the hole that appears on the cover of the scorecard. You'll see about a half dozen or more holes on this course with the large waste bunkers, similar to the design of Dick Gray at The Florida Club. My observation about this course on the day I played was that the greens were in great shape but the fairways were kinda shabby. It reminded me a little bit of The Florida Club (in terms of design) and a little bit of Dodger Pines. I don't think it's a top echelon course. I would rank it in with Club Med Sandpiper, Gator Trace, Dodger Pines and Saint James in terms of course quality. One more thing, no matter how immune you think you are to no-see-ums and mosquitos, better bring along some DEET spray and put it on everywhere (arms, legs, back of neck, ears) on this course. As my playing partner mentioned "They don't call this place Bug Island for nothing!"

I played about 3 weeks ago and i payed $3.00 because i have youth
membership with savannahs. The course was in good condition and the
greens were looking very good. There weren't any holes that gave me
much trouble other than hole 4. High handicappers should always try
to play it safe because there is a lot of water on the course, so try
to put it in the middle of the fairway and short rather than trying
to kill it and end up having to take a drop.
