Although I have been a life-long railroad enthusiast and came from a railroad
family, it has only been in the past six years that I began exploring the
railways on the European Continent with a vengeance.
My first contact with the S-Bahn immediately occurred, not surprisingly,
during my first visit to Berlin. While en route to Bahnhof Zoo on a
mainline Deutsche Bahn train, I encountered my first S-Bahn
sighting. I was greatly intrigued by the well- maintained pre-war
equipment and great traction motor sounds. (Later I learned that
some of these cars were nearly seventy years old...having been through the
wild 1920's, dictatorship, World War II, the Cold War, and the
reunification of Berlin.) I made
up my mind to set out exploring the S-Bahn system the very next day.
It was obvious that the S-Bahn was in a great transition stage
following the reunification of Berlin and general modernization of the
entire system was underway. I made aggressive efforts to photograph ,
video, and ride the old S-Bahn equipment before it disappeared completely
from the Berlin cityscape.
This site documents some of my personal activity during this
period. I hope that you will find it enjoyable, particularly if you
are a S-Bahn enthusiast like myself!
