Become a tutor |
|
Make a difference in someone's life-become a tutor for native or non-native speakers of English. Experience the rewards!! Help adult non-readers become new readers, more productive employees, more informed citizens, and more confident and enriched individuals. What does it take to become a tutor? · You don't need foreign language skills, a teaching degree or a college education. · You do need the desire to help and the ability to speak, read and write English well. First you must attend an information meeting at the Torrance Public Library. Call the office at 310-373-7003 to find out when the next one is scheduled. Meetings are held once a month. Then you attend a training session. Training sessions for tutors are offered several times a year. The training for Basic Literacy is 10 hours given as 2 1/2 hours per evening over 4 weeks. The training for English as a Second Language (ESL) is 18 hours given as 3 hours per evening twice a week for 3 weeks. The Computer training is 15 hours given as 3 hours per evening twice a week for 2 1/2 weeks. Every tutor is expected to become a member of SBLC. The cost for membership is $15 a year. There is no charge for the training. Certificates are issued at the end of training. You are now ready to tutor at a center or one on one. SBLC expects that you will make a good faith effort to tutor for at least 2 hours a week for at least a year in return for the training. All tutors are volunteers. |
