Club History

The SunBonnetSue Quilters began in the home of Arna and Pat Lyons, former mayor of Vero Beach, in 1979 as part of the Women's Club.  Today there are over 90 members of the club who meet regularly every Thursday at the Church of Christ on SR60 to create beautiful quilts using a variety of styles and methods.  This guild has an open membership with dues of $25.00 each year.

SBSQ invites you to our Quilt Show held every odd numbered year.

Club members have created 180 quilts that are registered with the Florida Quilt Heritage --- a non-profit library of recognized Florida quilts.  One-of-a-kind quilts have been created for many local organizations including:

  • The Humane Society
  • Center for the Arts
  • American Red Cross
  • Pelican Island Audubon Society
  • Indian River County Main Library
  • Kiwanis Club
  • Indian River Volunteer Ambulance Squad
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • VNA Hospice of Vero Beach
  • American Cancer Society
  • Dogs for Life
  • plus local benefits such as The Mark Reilly Fund

The club has two quilts which are on permanent display for the public.  A 24 square quilt of county highlights is located at the Indian River County Administration Building. The other, designed by Doris Hall, features native wildlife of Florida and is displayed in the Environmental Learning Center in Wabasso.

SBSQ have been designing a quilt for the McKee Botanical Gardens of Vero Beach.  The quilt is now on display in the Educational building.

McKee Botanical Gardens 2004 permanent quilt display by Sunbonnet Sue Quilters, designed by Pat Lester, Margaret Bell & Ouida Wyatt. 90% hand work, 100" width by 45" length. Many SBSQ members made this quilt with Pat Lester placing the fabrics together.

Members have donated quilts to various organizations such as the Vero Beach Police Department to help children who face trauma and to various hospitals for severely ill children.

The SunBonnetSue Quilters sponsored the "Aids Memorial Quilt" as it traveled through Vero Beach in 1996.  Part of this well-known quilt was on display in the club's 1997 Pieces and Patches Quilt Show that was held at The Heritage Center.

SunbonnetSue Quilters Guild is a member of the Sunshine State Quilters Association, Inc.  SSQA is an organization for all of "Florida's Visionary Quilters."  This is a wonderful group -- for more information, visit their website.
