President's LetterQuestion of the Day: What is CHC Theory? If you were fortunate enough to be one of the eighty-two psychologists that attended the Cross-Battery Assessment workshop sponsored by SCCASP on September 13th, you are now able to answer that question; and, if you missed our first professional development presentation by Allen Lloyd-Jones on this topic, then I will share the answer: CHC Theory is the Cattell-Horn-Carroll Theory of Cognitive Abilities. This theory has a well-validated, theoretical foundation, based on research. It is the foundation for the development of the cross-battery assessment. The State of California is looking in this direction as the new model for assessment of students with special needs. As always, Allan Lloyd-Jones did a great job of helping us understand the rationale and the process involved in using this new approach. If you would like to learn more about cross-battery assessments, or CHC Theory, just look inside our newsletter this month for some helpful websites! Special thanks to all of the SCCASP professionals who helped with the coordinating of the facilities, handouts, recording keeping, registration desk, gourmet breakfast offerings, and general organization! It went well because of you! Attachment Disorders WorkshopLinda Webster, Ph.D., will present our November 1st workshop on the topic of Attachment Disorders. Dr. Webster is an Associate Professor and the Department Chair of the Educational and School Psychology Program at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. Her areas of interest are in child maltreatment, measurement of attachment, assessment of attachment disorders, and teacher-student relationships and the impact on learning. She is a frequent presenter at NASP and CASP and frequently writes for CASP Today. I hope you can all join us to learn more about the identification, assessment, and recommended treatment plans for children identified with attachment disorders. Check our calendar of events for the location and time or click here for directions and information. Kit Galvin SCCASP President |
