The Reading Center is a privately owned school and is supported solely by
tuition. Our school is licensed by the State of Alabama (Act 87), the County
of Madison, and the City of Huntsville. We accept students into our program
based on standardized testing and work performance. Subjects not requiring
a test are tutored or taught based on needs
No student is denied admission because of race, color, religion, national or
ethnic origin.
Tutoring Tutoring is done on a one-to-one basis. We tutor in Remedial Reading, Rapid and Effective Reading, Math Essentials, Handwriting, Science, PreAlgebra, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Social Studies, Paragraph Development, Phonics, English (written, grammar, and oral), Study Skills, and Language Arts. Tutoring is paid in advance. Parents pay for the time and teacher. The teachers will be paid for all assigned times. No credit for cancellations or absences will be given. Tutoring is $40.00 per hour payable at the beginning of the month.You pay for the time assigned. For example: If you are coming on Mondays from 3:30-4:30 p.m. and the month has 4 Mondays, the cost is $160.00 due on the first Monday of that month. Group Classes Group classes are available for Remedial Reading. The Remedial Reading groups meet on Saturday mornings during the school year and weekdays during the summer. Post testing is included free of charge for reading at the end of every 10 week session. English Language (writing, grammar, and oral) andStudy Skills classes are offered during weekdays in the summer. Classes are limited to 6 students per teacher. Students are individualized within their appropriate group. Testing Testing is available for Reading and Study Skills by appointment. Testing is used to determine the causes of reading deficiency in terms of a pupil's individual handicaps and seeks to answer questions such as: What particular skills are under-developed in relation to the child's age and grade level? Tests include both silent and oral tests of reading speed and accuracy, vocabulary, comprehension and word analysis skills. Placement is determined after evaluation of the testing. We also test advanced students and challenge them with vocabulary, speed and comprehension skills. Math testing is available through grade 8. Teachers Teachers on our staff are selected not only for the necessary degree they hold, but also for their personality, experience, love of teaching, understanding and ability to employ these qualities. Classes in reading are held each Saturday during the school year. They begin on August 19, 2006. Classes meet each Saturday except the following: Fall Break (Oct. 7-14); Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 25); Christmas holidays (Dec. 23, 30); classes for 2007 begin January 6th. Spring Break - No class (March 17-24). The final Saturday classes will be May 19, 2007. Post testing is provided for students following ten consecutive weeks (One Cycle). Groups must have 3-6 students to function. (We also tutor Sat. from 8 a.m.-12 noon). Registration is easy. Simply drop by the school at 3348 L&N Drive in Huntsville and fill out a registration form indicating the classes or tutoring to be taken, or call (256) 883-2910 and provide the necessary information over the phone. We will set up a testing appointment and/or tutoring time that works for both of us. Fees One-to-one tutoring is $40.00 per hour. Instruction in small groups of six or less students is $17.50 per hour for a 20 hour cycle. Testing by appointment is $75.00 for Reading and Study Skills and $100.00 for Key Math.
Post testing is free of charge following 10 weeks of Saturday classes during
the school year and after 3 weeks or more of daily classes during the
summer. Refunds A dissatisfied client should notify the office immediately so proper steps can be taken to prorate monies paid. Remedial Reading Basic skills are stressed and include instruction in phonics, word attack skills, vocabulary, comprehension, speed and accuracy. Group instruction is offered for all school age children from grades 1-12. In addition to group instruction, there is a supervised period in our learning laboratory where the student works independently using special materials selected by the teacher. Classes are limited to six students. During the school year groups meet on Saturday. The summer classes for remedial reading meet Monday through Friday, two hours per day. We are closed on Saturday during the summer. Math Essentials Math Essentials provides individual instruction for students from kindergarten through high school. Basic facts are mastered systematically using a timed sequential program. Students master the tables, solve problems and comprehend math concepts. We use a wide variety of materials and techniques, ranging from the "mad minute" to computer assisted instruction. This course is offered only in the summer. Study Skills This course is designed for Junior High and High School students who do not need remedial reading. The course includes organization skills, listening, outlining, note taking, test preparation, and use of reference materials. Our Junior High and High School reading classes also include some study skills. One-to-one (tutoring) is also available when we do not have enough students for a class. Handwriting Written communication skills are essential in today's society. Our instruction includes letter formation for upper and lower case letters, spacing, connecting letters (in cursive) and proper organization. Writing skills are taught on a one-to-one basis. English (Written, Grammar, and Oral) Students' tutoring is individualized and includes grammar plus written and oral communication skills. Rapid and Effective Reading Rapid and Effective Reading is taught primarily to High School through adult level. Students must have good basic skills since they will be taught the higher level skills of reading flexibility, rapid reading, skimming and scanning, etc. Some study skills are also included with this tutoring. As a result of this program, adults finds they can read better, comprehend more, and obtain greater pleasure from both their required and leisure-time reading.
