Silver Awards Projects

The following girls have earned their Silver Award and their projects are described below:

Katydid (Silver Award received June 1996)

Project: I held an event called "Birthplace Bound" with activities I learned while visiting the Birthplace in Savannah, GA.

Event Description (taken from the Event flier): "Experience the arts of Juliette Low's day. Try your hand at sculpting with clay, sketching, marching, making boxes you can take home, and an afternoon tea party with your friends. Have fun sampling activities from the Girl Scout National Center in Savannah, Georgia."

Why did you choose this project?: "I have chosen this project to share what I experienced on my trip to Savannah with other girls. I hope to get people excited about Troop Wider Ops..."

Event Schedule:

8:00-9:00       Morning Program Aides and helpers arrive

     9:00-9:15       Event Check In

9:15-9:30       Welcome and introduction (slice show)

     9:30-10:30      Session 1

10:30-11:00    Snack & video ("Golden Eaglet")

     11:00-12:00    Session 2

     12:00-12:30    Lunch

     1:30-2:00        Musical Tableau

     2:00-2:15        Check Out & Evaluation

     2:15-3:00        Clean-Up

What was the most successful aspect of your project?: The most successful part of my project was bringing Junior Girl Scouts to this event and giving them the chance to be able to go back in time and see what Juliette Low's life was like and what she did every day. the program was very successful with the people who came.

Feather (Silver Award received June 1997)

Project: I coordinated an effort to decorate 1072 paper bags for an organization called "Christmas Partners Limited" that provides gifts to the under-privileged. I enlisted the help of 13 troops in my area.

Why did you choose this project?: I selected this project because I wanted to help this organization continue their tradition of providing gifts in decorated bags to single family and under privileged families.

How did your project benefit others?: It benefited others because the elders that run the organization would have had to paint them all themselves. The people that received the gifts benefited because they had a merrier Christmas. The people that helped me paint the bags benefited because they got the knowledge of how to go about doing a Silver Award project and some ideas for projects too.

Munch (Silver  Award received June 1997)

Project: I held an event called "Shake, Rattle, & Roll", a dance workshop with professional consultants.

Event Description (Taken from event flier): "Discover different types of dance with some wild teachers! Experience aerobics, folk, and funk dancing. Then, with the skills you learn, make up a dance with your new friends and watch people perform new, innovative dances. Just make sure you can shake, rattle, and roll!"

Why did you choose this project?: "I selected this project because I am in dance and I thought it would be a fun event for Junior girls. Also, there aren't any opportunities for Juniors in our area to go to a workshop that has dancing in it."

Event Schedule:

     9:00     Check-In

     9:15     Session #1

    10:00    Snack

    10:15    Session #2

    11:00    Session #3

    11:45    Lunch

    12:15    Creative Dance Session

     1:00     Perform Creative Dances

     1:30     Good-bye!

What was the most successful aspect of your project?: "The most successful part of my project was the dance rotation. The funk dancing was rated the highest of all. Also, the creative dance session was very successful."

Dopey (Silver Award received May 1998)

Project: For my Silver Award, I put on an event for Junior Girl Scouts. The girls came all day and completed their Science Sleuth Badge.

Event Description (taken from the flier): Discover the possibilities of science while earning the Science Sleuth Badge. Come and make your own paper, grow crystals, and make a musical instrument. Send a secret message using invisible ink and make water move from one jar to another without pouring.

How did your project benefit others? My project benefited Junior Girl Scouts mainly because they learned science is fun. The girls also completed a badge. The leaders may have benefited in that they didn't have to plan a badge. If a leader wasn't proficient in science or didn't know where to go for resources, their girls didn't have to miss out.
