Introduction to the Band

An egg hatched and four strange birds emerged. After cutting their teeth individually in various bands and projects too numerous to list here, they roosted for a time in two of Columbia, South Carolina's most seminal bands: Lay Quiet Awhile, and Blightobody. As fate would have it, the dissolution of these two bands has given way to the Tantrums, fronted by Danielle Howle. The Tantrums are a hybrid of the lanky and the not so lanky, the quasi-cosmic and the technically adept, with a generous dusting of honest and unfettered emotional outburts; the result is a band with undeniable chemistry between its individual members that speaks for itself.

Q: What kind of music does Danielle Howle and the Tantrums play?
A:
We play Danielle songs- rock tinged music with a folk inspired song core. Our music has been described by critics as shifting from genre to genre, but actually, the music follows the lyrics, and each story has something different to express.

Q: What does "Do A Two Sable" (the title of the current cd) mean?
A:
We can't tell you that- but we can tell you that our latest cd, Do A Two Sable, was released last October on Daemon Records and was produced by David Leonard. Daemon Records is owned by Indigo Girl Amy Ray, and have released several of Danielle's previous works. David Leonard has worked in the past with big name artists such as Indigo Girls, Prince, Hall and Oates, Nancy Griffith, Oingo Boingo, John Mellencamp, Jackson Browne, etc... the list goes on... We were very excited and lucky to have him working on our recording.

Q: Why is Bryan Williams called the "Big Horse"?
A:
Sorry, that's classified.

Q: Does Danielle still play solo gigs?
A:
Absolutely. Danielle frequently leaves the band at home and tours acoustically. She has played solo gigs with Ani Difranco, Indigo Girls, Throwing Muses, Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, Elliot Smith and other well know acts; festivals such as Bumbershoot in Seattle, CMJ in NYC, SXSW in Austin, Reading in the UK; as well as shows at the occasional furniture store, sushi bar, and mexican restaurant at home and abroad.

Q: Who writes the songs?
A:
Danielle wrote most of the the "first batch" of tunes we play, taken from her huge stock of material. Songs in the "next batch" are usually introduced by Danielle and arrangements and parts are added by the band. John has written a few tunes, but on these and all others Danielle pens the lyrics.
