I am the 10th great granddaughter of Simon Burlingham.  The name was frequently spelled Burlingame, especially in America.

I only have the first 12 generations on this page --  I do not have any living descendants online, or the sources for this information.  If you want any furthur information, or have any to share, please e-mail me, Shelley Green.

Descendants of Simon Burlingham

Generation No. 1

1. SIMON1 BURLINGHAM was born Abt. 1490 in Brenton or Sharrington , Norfolk Co, England1, and died September 1556 in Brenton, Norwich Co., England2,3. He married AGNES UNKNOWN 1529 in England. She was born in England, and died Aft. 1567 in England.

Notes for SIMON BURLINGHAM:

The original inhabitants of what is now known as England were the Celts who in turn were invaded by the Romans and the Celts were driven into what is now Scotland and Ireland. These invaders were known as Britons. After the withdrawal of the Roman forces about the beginning of the fifth century, the South Britons were no longer able to withstand the attacks of the Scots and Picts. They applied for assistance from the Roman General Aetius, but he was too much involved in the struggle with Attila to attend to their petitions. In desperation the Britons sought the aid of the Saxons; and according to Anglo-Saxon narratives, three ships containing 1600 men were dispatched to their help under the command of the brothers Hengest and Horan. These Saxons were assigned the isle of Thanet for habitation, and from there marched against the northern foe, obtaining complete victory. The date assigned to these events by the later Anglo-Saxon Chronicles is 449 A.D. The Chronicles also states that the Saxons, finding the land desirable, turned their arms against the Britons, and reinforced by new bands, the Jutes and Angles, conquered first Kent and ultimately the larger part of the island. These Saxons, Jutes and Angles were Teutonic tribesmen coming from the country about the mouths of the Elbe and Weser Rivers in ancient Germany. This struggle continued for about 150 years and at the end of that time, most of the South of Briton was in the hands of these Teutonic tribes. This conquered territory was then divided into small states. In 571 or 575 A. D., the Kingdom of East Angles was founded by Uffa. This in turn was broken up into petty chieftaincies, one of them being Burlingham, which means Byrl, "The cup bearer" , "ing" is the suffix meaning "son" and "hame" is the Anglo suffix meaning "home clan" or in other words, home or clan of the sons of Byrl. Here the clans of Burlingham lived and prospered until early in the ninth century when the Danes, another Low German tribe, began making raids on this section and as these attacks became more frequent and in time the Danes had conquered all of what is now the counties of Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridge. The Burlinghams were driven from their homes and fled into Wessex. By a treaty made at Wedmore, in 878 A. D., the English kind, Alfred the Great, had recognized the conquest of these Danes and made a pack with Guthrum, their leader. By this treaty, the Danes were allowed to retain the land they had conquered, but they must be baptized. After peace was established, the Burlinghams returned to their homes but with the loss of most of their property and they established new homes and made a fresh start.

The name of Burlingham and Byrlinghaminga appear quite frequently in the ancient Saxon Chronicles; the final suffix "inga" being dropped prior to the Norman Invasion in the eleventh century. The suffix "ing" still remains in many English names and coupled with the Anglo suffix "Hame" meaning home or clan, gives us such names as Birmingham, Burlingham, Dillingham, etc.,

The name was spelled various ways, Byrlingham, Baelingam, Berlingenam, Birlingham, Berlingaham, Burlingham, Berlingham, , Burlingham, Burlingame. After the twelfth century, the name was generally spelled Burlingham.

4. ROGER4 BURLINGHAM (THOMAS3, PETER2, SIMON1) was born 24 January 1620 in Darwich, Kent, England14, and died 01 September 1718 in Mashantatack, Cranston, Providence Co., RI14. He married (2) JACOLYN HUNTINGDON 1646 in England15. He married (3) MARY ELIZABETH LIPPITT 03 October 1663 in Warwick, Kent Co., RI16,17, daughter of JOHN LIPPITT and MARTHA UNKNOWN. She was born 03 March 1643 in Providence, Kent Co., RI18, and died 05 July 1718 in Mashantatack, Cranston, Providence, Kent Co., RI19.

Notes for ROGER BURLINGHAM:

Roger Burlingham was also known as Roger Burlingame, which is an American corruption of the original English name Burlingham. After he came to Rhode Island, his name appears in both forms. Over time, most family members adopted the name Burlingame.

Roger was born 24 Jan 1620 (Doherty and Jacox both say 1638) in Darwich, Kent, England and married Jacolyn Huntingdon about 1646 in England. After Jacolyn's death, Robert married Mary Lippitt, daughter of John Lippitt and Martha (??) on 3 Oct 1663 in Warick, RI. Roger died on 1 Sep 1718 in Mashantatack, Providence, RI at age 98. His estate was valued at 199 pounds, 13 shillings, 8 pence, and included a mare, three cows, three yearlings, a calf, two sheep, two swine, an old sword, clothing, scales, cash, etc.

He enlisted in the British Army at age 16, serving in his uncle Roger Burlingham's regiment, and eventually became a Captain. His company was sent to America, landing at Boston, MA on 10 May 1650. Soon thereafter he resigned his commission. He went to Connecticut, intending to buy a farm and send for his wife and son in England, not knowing that his wife had died.

On 16 Feb 1656, he and Thomas Griffian bought 100 acres of land on the east side of "the brooke called misticke" in Pequot (now New London), RI from Peter Blatchford for 40 pounds. Roger sold this property on 1 Mar 1659 to William Thompson. On 14 Mar 1659 Thompson filed a complaint against (Thomas Burlingham", charging him with gathering crops on this farm. There is no other record of Thomas Burlingham at this date and may have been Thomas Griffian, named Burlingham by mistake. On 7 Mar 1663, Tollarton Harris testified in court that on 12 Jul 1662 he saw Samuel Gorton, George Goff, Roger Burlingame, and Ebenezer Moone mowing the grass on the property of W. Field and W. Harris, near a place called Toskeonke on the north side of the Pawtuxet River. Similar testimony was given by Andrew Harris. Roger Burlingame, along with Thomas Ralph and John Harrud, claimed that they had been granted the property, totaling 4000 acres, by the Cooweeseette Indians on 6 Jun 1662. Field and Harris claimed that they had been granted the property by the King. The court found in favor of Field and Harris and ordered Burlingame and the others to leave the land, and pay 10 shillings damages. They did not leave, however. The Town Sergeant put off enforcing the verdict, knowing that the community favored Burlingame and the others. On 1 May 1670, T. Harris testified that on 21 Apr 1670 he and the General Sergeant went to John Harrud's home to execute the verdict, and were turned away at gunpoint. Harrud was supported by about 15 men, including John Weeks Sr. and Jr., Edmund Calvery, Roger Burlingame and Benjamin Barton. Eventually, Burlingame, Harrud, and Ralph won out, partly due to Harris' death.

Roger bought lands from the Cooweeseette Indians on 23 Jun 1662 and 13 may 1663. The site of his home is "about one and one-half miles northwesterly from Oak Lawn Depot, Cranston, Rhode Island." He built a 2 1/2 story "Mansion House" about 1666, which was about 35x60 feet. On 25 Sep 1671, Thomas Ralph, Roger Burlingame, and John Harrud were authorized by the General Assembly to set the tax rate and levy assessments for the town of Mashantatack. In Oct 1671, they were ordered to levy a tax of 40 shillings on the townspeople, as their share of the 200 pounds levied on the Rhode Island Colony.

On 6 Oct 1682, Roger Burlingham "of Mashantatack" bought land in Warwick from Abel Potter, and then Roger Burlingham "of Warwick" sold the land to his son John the same day. On 6 Sep 1684 he deeded his homestead in Mashantatack, RI totaling about 83 acres to his son Peter, reserving a lifetime lease. (Jacox and McPherson both put this date at 6 Sep 1704, and the land at 50 acres). On 15 Mar 1708 he deeded an additional 15 acres of land to Peter, to the west of his homestead in Mashantatack, including some iron ore beds. He was elected to the General Assembly from Warick, RI on 6 May 1690, but was not accepted by the Assembly because of the question of his legal residence, and hence the legality of the election. The questions arose from his purchase and sale of land in Warwick on 6 Oct 1682, described above, in which he claimed residency in Mashantatack in one deed and in Warwick in the other. The Assembly declared he was from Mashantatack, not Warwick.

On 24 Apr 1697, in Providence, Providence, RI he was one of 21 men who were ordered by a Council of War to take ten men each, to search for the Indian enemies, and if possible to expel or kill them. If they were too strong however, he was to warn the inhabitants. (The date of this order calls into question the birth date given by Nelson Burlingame, and makes the 1638 date given by other sources more credible. A birth date of 1638, however, would mean that he couldn't have joined the British Army in 1636, married Jacolyn Huntingdon in 1646, and had a son in 1648, or come to the US as a Captain in the British Army in 1650.)

He was elected constable in Providence on 7 Jun 1697. He was elected to the town council of Providence on 6 Jul 1698. He and his family were Quakers, and up until about 1711, they held their meetings at his Mansion House in Mashantatack, Providence, RI.

His will was dated 28 Nov 1715 in Providence, Providence, RI. The witnesses were John Burton, Mary Burton, and Peter Robards. It was proved 13 Sep 1718, and his son Roger and sons-in-law Thomas Arnold and Amos Stafford were named as overseers. His wife Mary was named as executrix, but since she had died, his son John took over. He left his movable estate to his wife Mary. At her death, this was to be evenly divided between his daughters, and his granddaughters Freelove Burlingame (of his son, Roger), Frances Gorton, and Deborah Hazzard. He left 50 acres of land to his son Roger and his grandson John Burlingame, and the rest of his land to his son Thomas. He also left about 20 shillings each to his sons, John, Thomas, and Roger.

I also have the date of 1629 as his birth date, and Coventry, Kent Co., England as the place of birth. This info was from the Ancestry World Tree.

This is about the time that some members of the family, perhaps Jeremiah or his son Jeremiah, petitioned to change the spelling of the family name to Burlingame. The new spelling was incorrectly applied by some researchers, to earlier generations. Therefore Roger and his immediate descendents appear at Burlingame in many references. This is probably incorrect as the variation "Burlingame" is unknown in England. Apparently some later generations reverted back to the original spelling of "Burlingham" at some unknown time.

Notes for ISRAEL BURLINGAME:

Israel was very active in the affairs of the town of Weathersfield. His name appeared in town records for the first time in 1773. Israel served as town clerk in 1774 through 1781 and in 1783. The state of Vermont organized in 1778. The first representative to the General Assembly from Weathersfield was Israel Burlingame, elected in 1778. He served as a Select Man from March 1778 through 1780.

"While the Revolutionary War was in progress . . . the affairs of the settlers were managed by committees in the various towns, who, when occasion required, met in general convention to provide for common defense and general welfare. Weathersfield was represented in these conventions in 1775 and 1776 by Oliver Kidder, Hezekiah Grout, Israel Burlingame and William Upham. The decrees of these conventions were regarded as law, and violations were severely punished." (Vermont - Historical Gazetteer, by Abby Maria Hemenway, 1867, p. 701)

Israel served in the Revolutionary War as a Lieutenant from Weathersfield in Hilkiah Grout's Company of the Upper Regiment of Cumberland County in 1775. He was included in a list of field officers as a Lieutenant. This list was signed by Simeon Stevens, Joseph Marsh and Benjamin Wait and was dated 15 August 1775. Israel also served in a Return of Men and Horses employed by Captain Abel Marsh in carrying flour from the Connecticut River to Battenkill (River) for the use of the Northern Army by order of Jacob Bayley dated 13 October 1777. He served for 10 days, utilizing 2 horses, rode for a total of 120 miles, and earned 16 shillings/day for a total earning of 8 pounds.

This delivery of flour to the Northern Army was begun six days after The Battle of Bemis Heights (which occurred on 7 October 1777 in Saratoga County, NY). It was a successful battle for the patriots and was the final battle of the campaign that has gone down into history under the collective title of The Battle of Saratoga. Only one day before the flour delivery began, on 12 October 1777, British General John Burgoyne had come to the conclusion that there was nothing else to do but surrender and asked patriot General Horatio Gates for terms. "Gates curtly replied that Burgoyne must surrender unconditionally. Infuriated, refusing to submit to such a disgrace, Burgoyne threatened to fight to the last man - whereupon Gates relented, and conditions were agreed upon. Under these the British troops marched out of their encampment with full honors of war, drums beating, fifes squealing, (although tears were flowing) to stack arms . . . they were to march to Boston and there await transportation to Britian. When the surrender took place at two o'clock in the afternoon of 17 October 1777, . . . Burgoyne looking 'like a dandy instead of a warrior', removed his plumed hat with a flourish, bowed - and said: 'General, the caprice of was has mad me your prisoner.' Bowing in reply, Gates replied, 'You will always find me ready to testify that it was not brought about through any fault of your Excellency Thus ended The Battle of Saratoga, the campaign that turned the tide of the Revolutionary War against Great Britian." (George Washington's War, by Robert Leckie, pub. by Harper Perennial, 1993)

Israel Burlingame was one of 55 men who signed a petition dated 5 Sep 1786 from Weathersfield, VT requesting of "the honorable, the General Assembly of the State of Vermont", "whereas . . . America is become a distinct and separate Empire, independent of Great Britian, not only in the political, but in the moral and religious sense also; . . . and whereas the Bishop of London hath lately informed the Episcopal Clergy and churches of this country, that they may expect no further assistance from the above mentioned Society, whilst they remain within the limits of the United States" - "to grant to said town, that right of land, originally granted and chartered to the British Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in foreign parts, lying and being in said Town of Weathersfield, for the purposes of schooling children and youth, and maintaining the Gospel Ministry, in said Town; that so said lands may be still improved for the promotion of the same worthy and pious design, for which they were first granted; and your Petitioners may be thereby assisted in the education of their children, and the maintenance of the Gospel Ministry among them." The petition was filed on 14 Oct 1786, read in assembly on 23 Oct 1786 and referred to the next session. On 26 Oct 1787, an act was passed whereby the Selectmen of the several Townships in the state were authorized "to improve the Glebe and society lands."

At least three of Israel Burlingame's children removed from Vermont and settled initially in Chenango County, NY. Israel was listed in the 1790 and 1800 US Census reports as still living in Weathersfield. In the 1810 Census, he and/or his son Israel, Jr. were listed as living in the town of Windsor, Windsor County, VT. Eunice (Crandall) Burlingame died on 17 May 1809 according to the Bible of Joshua Burlingame (owned by Lillian A. Eldridge of Norwich, Chenango, NY in 1954). She possibly died in Windsor, VT. Notes for SOLOMON FARWELL:

See Farwell Genealogy, #741, p. 198 et. seq. Also from another narrative found in notes of Cora Gould Mills: Solomon's sister Hannah married Peter Bentk and in 1798 the two men, brothers in law, went to Denmark, Lewis County NY, cleared an acre of land and built a log house, and returned to Vermont. Two years later, in 1800, they loaded all the earthly possessions of both families on one oxcart and emigrated to their new home in Lewis County, NY...

Both families occupied the same log house. The young wives built a stone oven and baked 1400 lbs of flour into bread for the movers that came into that country that year. At one time the two husbands were called away for the night. The two wives with their little ones less than one year old each, (one of whom was the mother of Kenwood Wade Brown) were besieged by wolves, and tho the log house was surrounded even to the roof, and the stick chimney was mounted, they burned the straw from their massive straw ticks and kept up the dense smoke 'till the fierce beasts gave up the attack...

Notes for SOLOMON DODGE:

Solomon Dodge was

born in 1767 in Vermont and came to Oxford in 1791 from Sidney in

company with Daniel Tucker. There were but two houses in the village at

that time. He was in the employment of General Hovey and worked under

him in cutting the road from Undilla river to the Chenago at Oxford.

His second coming to Oxford was in the fall of 1795 in company with Mrs.

Jonathan Baldwin, who came through Egremont, Mass. At this time he

settled on what is known as the Morse farm, owned by Alpha and Edward

Morse. Mr. Dodge made a small clearing, using the logs to build his

first house, which had neither chimney or windows, excepting a hole in

the roof and a blanket for a door. After he had cut the trees far enough

away so that they would not fall on the building, he put up a second log

house, which was consider quite luxuries, for it had doors, widows and

chimney. He married Dorcas Burlingame not far from 1796, who was born

March 12, 1766, in Vermont. She had one sister,Azubah, and one brother,

Ritchison, who was the first surveyor of the town. Mr. Dodge sold out in

1802 to Daniel Denison, and returned to Willet where he purchased a

large farm, but meeting with many reverses, returned to Oxford after

five or six years and settled west of the village in what is known as

"Dodge Hollow", where he died of numb palsy in April, 1830. The only

descendants of Mr. Dodge now living in Oxford, are Herbert Emerson, B.

M. Emerson, and John E. Jones. Mr. Dodge was a lover of a good horse and

in his day owned many fine ones. While living in "Dodge Hollow" he built

a race track on his farm, which on many occasions called together

sportsmen of that day to witness the strife between the owners of fast

steppers. After the death of her husband, Mrs Dodge lived with her

daughter, Mrs. Gideon Lawton in McDonough, where she died in

1845. THIS INFORMATION COMES FROM "THE ANNALS OF OXFORD" BY HENRY J. GALPIN, PUBLISHED IN 1906 - SENT TO ME BY OLIVE MAE LINDELL, OML@JANE.PENN.COM

"Brother Ira Burlingame was born in Weathersfield, VT on Nov. 5, 1778, where he spent his youthful days and before he arrived to manhood, he went to Oxford, Chenango Co. in this state, where he experienced religion in Nov. 1818, and united with the Baptist Church in December following. In 1827, he removed to Franklinville, Cattaraugus, NY where he spent the remainder of his days. Here he soon identified himself with the Baptist Church and heartily espoused its interests and labored to promote its upbuilding and the general interest of religion until his days were ended. He died Nov. 29, 1846 in the 69th year of his life, in the faith and hope of the Gospel, leaving a family of a wife and twelve children to mourn his loss.
