The information I have from Peter Dodge down to William and Richard's father is gleanings from "Joseph T. Dodge, Colonial Families of the USA" and some speculation from an e-mail Dodge. All of us Dodges would like it if any of you have some actual proof of this lineage, and would e-mail me with your information. According to the book "Colonial Families of the United States of America: Vol I", the founder of the Dodge family was Peter Dodge of the town of Stopworth, in the County of Chester; gentleman; who did such loyal and valiant service for the good content of his Sovereign Lord, King Edward I, that he and his heirs forever were entitled to have, use, and enjoy a coat of arms fully described in a Patent dated 8th April, 1306, in the Herald's College. His descendant, John Dodge of Rotham, in Kent, was granted in 1547 a confirmation of the early Patent.

His will was written 2 April 1635, and proved 15 October, 1635.
An examination of the Parish Registry of East Coker, Somersetshire, England discloses the records of the birth of 4 children; William, Richard, Michael and Mary. these four children are also named in the 1635 will of John Dodge Sr. The will does not show Mary's married name. There also seems to be a son John Dodge, who went to America and died there before his father died. Therefore, he is not named in his father's will. It is stated that his brother William carried the news of John Jr's death to his father early in the year of 1635, whereupon John Sr. wrote his last legal epistle.
According to H. F. Waters, Wrotham and Wrotham Heath, are almost side by side and just West of Maidstone in the County of Kent, England. Chinnock and Coker are neighboring parishes in the extreme South or Southeast part of Somersetshire, England. Halstock, in the County of Dorset, England, referred to in the will, is just over the county line South of these parishes.

Book Municipal History of Essex County Mass (F72, E7, A7) Vol 1 Published by the Lewis Historical Publishing Co., Page 34 - "William Dodge was the son of John and Margery Dodge of Somersetshire. In the 2nd letter of instruction to Gov. Endicott, dated London, May 28, 1629, the secretary stated that Mr. White wished to have the following direction inserted "That you would show all lawful favor and respect unto the planters that come in the Lion's Whelp, out of the cities of Dorset and Somerset, that you would appoint unto William Dodge, a skillful and painful husbandman, the charge of a team of horses."William sailed from Gravestend 25 April 1629 and from the Isle of Wight 11 may 1629, landing at Salem MA 29 June 1629. Salem at that time included the towns to become Beverly, Wenham, Hamilton, Ipswich, Danvers, Peabody and other territory. He settled in the part of Salem that became Beverly, and up until 1668 was known as Bass River-side, separated from Salem town by the Bay.

Captain John Dodge, chosen Representative to the General Court in 1692/2-96 and again in 1702, was frequently on the Grand and Petit Juries and on various town and parish committees. "He was one of the useful and prominent men in the colonies." In 1710 he gave 33 acres of land in Wenham to his grandson John dodge, and otherwise disposed of his real estate.

Notes for SARAH PROCTOR:
Sarah was shown as having been born in 1646, but as she was married in 1659, she probably was not married at age 13. She is NOT mentioned as having arrived with her parents upon departure from ENG in 1635 on the ship Susan and Ellen. Only John and Mary are listed on passenger list.

A lawsuit in 1673 with its various depositions brought out the fact that William Dodge Sr, and John Proctor Sr, had "made up the match between John Dodge and Sarah Proctor, son and daughter of Dodge and Proctor. Said William dodge promised to give a parcel of land with his son John and said Proctor engaged to give 40 li with his daughter Sarah. Dodge further said "Not withstanding what is Giuen; what shall thess young beginners do for household stuff' and deponent John West proposed that Dodge shoud give his son John 10 li and Proctor should give his daughter 5 li, to be paid at the merchants to which proposition they both agreed."

THOMAS DODGE, JR. 6 (Thomas 5, John 4, John 3, John 2, William 1) was born Sept 11, 1754, Brookfield, Worcester Co., Mass and died place and date unknown. He married December 30, 1773 Brookfield, Worcester County, Mass. to Molly (or Mary or Mercy) Allen who is guessed to be a descendant of the Walter Allen family of Newbury, Mass rather than a descendant of the Rhode Island Aliens. Genealogy books show several of Walter Allen's descendants relocating in Worcester County and the names of Molly, Mercy, and Mary were common in this line.
I He left Brookfield, Worcester Co., Mass. in the 1780's and it is unknown where he went. Speculation exists he may have gone to New York or Vermont. It is conjecture that the Thomas Dodge who bought and sold property 1779 and 1805 in Brookfield, Madison County, New York may have been the same person. Speculation also exist he either died young or relocated far west or far south since the New England, New York and Penn state censuses for 1790 and 1800 do not show what appears to be a match.
He fought in the Revolutionary War for Brookfield, Worcester Co., Mass and was enlisted as late as Jan 1, 17 81 as Thomas Jr. His Rev War physical description was as follows: short around 5 foot 8 inches, dark complexion, black hair, age 27.

Notes for REUBEN DODGE:
Reuben Dodge served in the Rev War for Brookfield Worcester Co., Mass and his wife Elizabeth received a Widows Pension W-20996. Among his land and sea service he fought in Concord April 19, 1775 as a volunteer. The information and depositions in the Widows Pension indicated that Elizabeth was commonly called Betsey by her relatives. While Reuben Dodge resided in Oxford, Chenango Co.. N. Y. his house was burned with his Rev War papers inside. It is confirmed that Reuben Dodge lived next door to his brother Solomon Dodge in the 1800 census for Oxford, Chenango Co., N. Y. Reuben Dodge did not record land ownership and perhaps he lived in a cabin on brother Solomon Dodge's farm, or perhaps just didn't record his ownership. While serving in the Rev. War in the army, Reuben Dodge drove a team of horses and wagon from Boston from Boston passing through Brookfield, his native town, to the Army of New York State carrying military stores and provisions. Jesse Hamilton, brother of Racheal Hamilton who was the second wife of brother John Dodge6, also father of Sally Hamilton who married Russell Dodge7, was the master wagoner. Elizabeth (or Betsey) Hayward was a descendant of the FIRST MAYFLOWER VOYAGER (Cape Cod Bay, Mass 1620) BY THE NAME OF WILLIAM WHITE. The ancestral lineage is as follows: Elizabeth Hayward7, Jonas Hayward Jr.6, Jonas Hayward 5, George Hayward 4, Anna White3, Resolved White2, WILLIAM WHITE 1). This can be verified in Mayflower Families through Five Generations, Volume One, edited by Lucy Mary Kellogg, pages 104-5, 122-5 It is guessed Reuben Dodge was moving to West Bloomfield, Ontario where he died Jan 3, 1813. possible Reuben Dodge was just passing through the area of West Bloomfield and happened to die there. The 1810 U S. census shows only one Reuben Dodge in the state of New York and that was in Watertown, Jefferson Co., NY. The ages and children match those of the family of Reuben Dodge.

For Rachel Hamilton (second wife), it is unknown if the second marriage was ever completed. There was only one Rachel Hamilton born in Brookfield, Mass and that was to Ezra Hamilton and Lydia Barnes on Jan 22, 1759. However there was also a Rachel Hamilton who married Buenos Ayres in March 29, 1789 and it is unknown if this is the same person. Buenos Ayers moved to Pelham, Hampshire Co., Mass. and was there in the 1820 U.S. Census.
Notes for LUCY KIMBALL:
Lucy Kimball (third wife) was born Jan 22, 1759 to Andrew Kimball and Rebecca Watson in Brookfield, Mass. John Dodge was a Rev War soldier and she filed a pension described below . In 1846 she moved to Eliza or New Boston Township, Mercer Co.. Illinois and she died Sept 5.1849. age 89 years. and is buried in Shields Cemetery, Sec. 4, near the city of Mannon in the Township of New Boston, Mercer Co., Illinois which is near the border line of Eliza Twsp. Abijah Wilson, and other Wilsons signed her Rev War Pension papers as witnesses; they appeared in the 1840 and 1850 censuses for Township 15, Eliza Twsp. Mercer County Illinois; and lastly they were buried near Lucy Dodge in Shields Cemetery. It is guessed Lucy Dodge's daughter married a Wilson. In the 1800 census for Oxford, Chenango Co., N.Y. John Dodge lived next door to Benjamin Wilson and Samuel Kimble (or Kimball).

Rheades Regt of the Mass. Line. Lucy Kimball's Widow's Pension W-22949 with depositions continued the following information: She was married two miles opposite of Unadelia, Otsego Co., N. Y. in Delaware County by a Judge named Wattles which could have been either Sluman, Nathaniel, or Charles Wattles. The widow's Pension mentioned both Nathaniel and Charles but the only Wattles known for sure to be a Judge was Sluman Wattles, cousin of Nathaniel.
Present at the Lucy Kimball marriage on John Dodge's side of the family were Ms mother, his sister, his sister's husband, and his two sons by a previous marriage to Elizabeth Hill. After a few months of marriage on April 10, 17 93 the family moved to Oxford, Chenango Co., N.Y.

Both Peter and Matilda Dodge are buried in East Troupsburg Cemetery. They left Oxford, N. Y. in 1831 and went to Troupsburg, Steuben Co., N. Y.
His parents John Dodge and Elizabeth Hill were mentioned in Lucy Kimball (3rd wife) Widows Pension for Rev War, W-22949 stating "sons Peter and John were born by his first wife Elizabeth Hill who died December 17 81 in Brookfield, Mass." A Connecticut birthplace was given for Peter by the 1850 U.S. Census but a Mass. birthplace was given in the 1855, N.Y. State Census. The Annals of Oxford, N.Y. by Henry Galpin, page 293 indicated Peter in 1800 came to Oxford, N.Y. from Vermont,but it is unknown where in Vermont.
In the 1810 U.S. Census for New York, two other Dodges lived near Peter Dodge in Prestoni Chenango Co., N. Y. They were Elijah Dodge (age over 45) and Nathaniel Dodge (age 26-45). It is speculation that they were related to Peter Dodge. Registered land deeds show Elijah's wife as Desdemona and Nathaniell s wife as Ann.
There is some speculation John 7, Peter 7, and Ruth 7 Dodge may have come from Gilford, Vermont. In 1808 John Dodge, Jr. sold his Norwich, Chenango Co., N. Y. land to Isaac Stafford of Gilford, Vermont. In 1810 U.S. Census Isaac Stafford was shown living next door to Peter Dodge in Oxford, Chenango Co., N. Y.

Notes for SOLOMON DODGE:
Solomon Dodge was
born in 1767 in Vermont and came to Oxford in 1791 from Sidney in
company with Daniel Tucker. There were but two houses in the village at
that time. He was in the employment of General Hovey and worked under
him in cutting the road from Undilla river to the Chenago at Oxford.
His second coming to Oxford was in the fall of 1795 in company with Mrs.
Jonathan Baldwin, who came through Egremont, Mass. At this time he
settled on what is known as the Morse farm, owned by Alpha and Edward
Morse. Mr. Dodge made a small clearing, using the logs to build his
first house, which had neither chimney or windows, excepting a hole in
the roof and a blanket for a door. After he had cut the trees far enough
away so that they would not fall on the building, he put up a second log
house, which was consider quite luxuries, for it had doors, widows and
chimney. He married Dorcas Burlingame not far from 1796, who was born
March 12, 1766, in Vermont. She had one sister,Azubah, and one brother,
Ritchison, who was the first surveyor of the town. Mr. Dodge sold out in
1802 to Daniel Denison, and returned to Willet where he purchased a
large farm, but meeting with many reverses, returned to Oxford after
five or six years and settled west of the village in what is known as
"Dodge Hollow", where he died of numb palsy in April, 1830. The only
descendants of Mr. Dodge now living in Oxford, are Herbert Emerson, B.
M. Emerson, and John E. Jones. Mr. Dodge was a lover of a good horse and
in his day owned many fine ones. While living in "Dodge Hollow" he built
a race track on his farm, which on many occasions called together
sportsmen of that day to witness the strife between the owners of fast steppers.
After the death of her husband, Mrs Dodge lived with her
daughter, Mrs. Gideon Lawton in McDonough, where she died in

The Annals of Oxford, N. Y. by Henry Galpin, p. 293-4, indicated that in the year 1800 John, Peter, and Ruth(brothers and sister)left their Vermont home and came to Oxford, Chenango Co,, N, Y, to reside with their uncle, Solomon Dodge. However it is unknown form where in Vermont they came. It is speculation they may have been staying with either uncle or grandfather Thomas Dodge Jr. or Sr. or the Hill family (deceased mother Elizabeth Hill) either of whom may have gone to Vermont. In 1800 their father John Dodge, Sr. 6 lived in Oxford, Chenango Co., N.Y. and the 1800 U.S. Census did not show sons John and Peter (between ages 16-26) living with him.
There is some speculation John 7, Peter 7 and Ruth 7 Dodge may have come from Gillord, Vermont. In 1805 John Dodge, Jr. sold his Norwich, Chenango Co., N. Y. land to Isaac Stafford of Gilford, Vermont. In 1810 U.S. Census Isaac Stafford was shown living next door to Peter Dodge in Oxford, Chenango Co., N. Y.
John Dodge submitted a deposition in favor of his step mother Lucy Kimball her Rev War Widows Pension: W-22949: "I am the son of John Dodge, Sr. by a previous wife named Elizabeth Hill who died when I was about 2 1/2 years of age." This is consistent with the death of Elizabeth (Hill) Dodge who died Nov or Dec 17 81 in Brookfield, Worcester Co., Mass and her death is recorded in the Brookfield Vital
Statistics up to 1850.
John Dodge is shown as a junior in every single land transaction in the early 1800's. Also in 1806, his name had a Junior after it while a Lieutenant in the N. Y. Militia for Chenango Co., on page 839 of Annual Report of the State Historian (N.Y.) by Hugh Hastings. He was one of the original organizers of the Baptist Church in Oxford, N. Y. in July 14, 1815.

Martin was referred to as William Martin Dodge in the Bible, and apparently in later life dropped the first name.
He lived from 1820-1846 in McDonough, Chenago Co., NY and died in 1846. His family under the new head of household eldest son Charles Edgar Dodge moved in 1850 to Rochester, Monroe County, NY, in 1860 to Bradford Twp, Chickasaw Co. Iowa, and 1870 to Nashua, Chicasaw County, Iowa and also to Floyd, Floyd Co., Iowa

William Dodge was a Private in Co. G., !2th Wis. Infantry. He enlisted September 23, 1861, and was mustered out July 13, 1865.
This company was organized in Madison Wi. It went to Fort Leavenworth KS, and then to Fort Scott KS in March of 1862.
It was in Grants Central Mississippi Campaign, and then was involved in guard duty along the Memphis and Charleston Railroad until March of 1863. It was in Vicksburg MS May 11, and participated in the siege of Vicksburg May 22-July 4, 1863. Then came the capture of Fort Beauregard Sept. 4 and back to Vicksburg until April 1864. It saw more action until it was disbanded in July 1865, but William was in the hospital from June 21 1864 to Feb.28, 1865.
He re enlisted as a veteran on Jan3, 1864.
The Regiment lost 3 officers and 93 enlisted men killed and 3 officers and 224 enlisted men by disease.
William contracted "chronic diarrhea caused by hard service and exposure" and was hospitalized in Memphis TN during July 1863.
Later he received a hernia on his left side caused by unloading a consignment from a steamboat at Natchez MS on or about Oct. 15, 1863.
Other hospitalizations:
March 13, 1863 - Jaundice and diarrhea
Nov. 2, 1864 to Dec. 5, 1864 - Chronic diarrhea
Feb. 11, 1865 - Pneumonia
Mar 3, 1865 - Acute bronchitis
There are several discrepancies about his age. The Family Bible has 1827 - his death certificate says 1826. His enlistment papers says he is 32 in 1861. His discharge says he was 34 in 1865! The Federal Census of 1880 gives his age as 46 making the year of his birth as 1834. I think he was 42 when he was married in 1869 to 16 year old Sarah.
He came to Marathon County in 1854 to "engage in logging".

There is a discrepancy about Sarah's middle initial. On her wedding certificate, she has Sarah R. On the pension papers for her Civil War widow's pension, she signed Sarah E.
