Reading, Pa. was the site of a Hessian Prisoner of War Camp. The Hessian were hired German Soldiers that fought on behalf of the British during the Revolutionary War. A small re-enactment took place on July 18th, 1998 near the site of their housing, on the east face of Mt. Penn. I learned that the Hessian were hired out into the community to work and some were quite smitten with the area and stayed behind after the war.To learn more about the Hessians visit these pages......

Wives cooked, cleaned his wounds and all too often buried him. Sometimes the soldiers family including children would accompany him on the warrior trail!

The family comes from the area where the Rhine River splits...the area south of current day Bad-Kreuznach in the Rhineland-Palatinate. The family town of Bremricher (just east of Bonn) no longer is found by me under that name. However Feil-Bingert and Stolzenberg still exist. They are very small towns across from each other at the Nahe River which is s-w of Bingen on the Rhine. I believe the area is between Bad Kreuznek and Alzey. The modern map here leads me to believe there is little farmland left in this area.
