The diaries of Anne Frank have sold 25 million copies in over 4 dozen languages. This new bio presents the pages that were censored out of the original 1947 publication of the diary, gives a deeper analysis of the Frank family and Anne's writings, provides more information on Anne's mother, Edith, and also accuses a cleaning woman (Lena van Bladeren Hartog) of giving the Frank's up to the Gestapo. It also tracks the importation of anti-Jewish laws in the "neutral" Netherlands, after Germany's invasion of May, 1940. The omitted lines are paraphrased and deal with Anne's views on her parent's marriage. It should be read in conjunction with the diary to gain a deeper insight in Anne, her life, and her death at 15. It opens with the arrest of Frank and seven others after two years of hiding on August 4, 1944 at 263 Prinsengracht in Amsterdam.

List Price: $25 before discount. Fall 1998. Hardcover - 384 pages. 800,000 people were killed in 3 months. Not with gas, not in death camps, but face to face with machetes. The Washington Post reviewer wrote that Gourevitch's compelling account of the Hutu/Tusi massacres should be required reading for those probing the inner workings of modern states. But the queasy and the hero-worshipers should abstain. I say it is a grim book about the attrocities. It should be required reading for anyone in the Shoah Business.
