The Keys to the Kingdom: The Rise of Michael Eisner and the Fall of Everyone Else by Kim Masters
Hardcover - 368 pages (March 22, 2000). This Spring is filled with books on Hollywood's Jewish leaders. First Wasserman, then Geffen, then Ovitz, now Eisner. This is a vivid, entertaining, tell-all book that replaces Eisner's no-tell auto-biography (Work In Progress). Masters paints a portrait, sometimes unfair, of Eisner as gifted and charming, yet manipulative and cutthroat (but it's Hollywood) and likens him to an isolated, secluded Richard Nixon alone with his thoughts and enemies. This is the story of how Eisner ascended to the throne at The Magic Kingdom. This is the real story about how Eisner and Frank Wells recreated Disney, taking it from a value of $2 billion to $28 billion, or 3200% growth when you include dividends and splits. This is especially about his falling out with Katzenberg. Includes interviews with Silverman, Allen, Diller, Sheinberg, Ovitz, and the late Don Simpson to name a handful. Note to file: Hey, when you are dealing with multi million dollar budgets, you have to be a tough negotiator and ride producers hard. Click to read more reviews of this book.

The Operator: David Geffen Builds, Buys and Sells the New Hollywood. By Tom King
(Feb 2000). Wall Street Journal reporter Tom King's unauthorized (but interviewed) bio on David Geffen. Over 300 interviews were conducted to create this bio of Geffen, who started in the mailroom of the William Morris agency (everyone, even lawyers, do a stint in the mailroom), to founding Geffen and Asylum records, to backing Cats and Dreamgirls, to producing the film Risky Business, to founding Dreamworks SKG.

Where Did I Go Right? : You're No One In Hollywood Unless Someone Wants You Dead by Bernie Brillstein with David Rensin
Hardcover - 400 pages (Winter 1999). Let me be blunt. This is an NC-17 rated book. Hollywood is a backbiting dirty biz of low or no ethics that was founded by Jewish immigrants and still populated by a wide assortment of Jewish players with a wide range of temperaments and personal agendas, like Mike Ovitz, Mike Eisner, and Brillstein. Bernie Brillstein was a major player and is a major-domo name dropper, and his account of his life is one of the few Hollywood books that is actually honest, even given all the narcissism. He confronts the deaths of Belushi and Henson (both clients), but fails in his rationalization of Belushi's drug addiction. He was on the inside of The Blues Brothers, The Muppet Show, and Ghostbusters, oh and Hee Haw also (didn't you know that Hee Haw was Jewish?). Brillstein was a fat Jewish New York kid from the Upper West Side (eldorado) and a vaudevillian family (Jack Pearl). Bernie started out in the William Morris Agency mailroom in 1955 (everyone starts in the mailroom, you know) to meet women (and he met many, since he was married countless times.) He was promoted to agent, and then became a producer, a personal manager, and a studio head (Lorimar). Now retired, he has worked with all the top comedians, and through his Brillstein / Grey company he has managed stars and demi-stars like Dennis Miller, Norm Crosby, Bill Maher, Burns and Schrieber (remember them?), the late Phil Hartman, David Spade, and anyone from SNL, and has been sued by Gary Shandling for $100 million. He pitches a fascinating story of the biz behind our popular culture. Click to read more reviews of this book.

Show Me the Magic by Paul Mazursky
Hardcover - 270 pages (June 1999). An interesting, light and witty Summer read that gives you insight into Mazursky's career and tales of movie production. Mazursky, born in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn started out as an actor (Blackboard Jungle), moved on to be a comedy writer (Danny Kaye, I Love You Alice B Toklas) when acting parts were infrequent, and made his directorial debut with Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice. My favorite scenes in the book? When a young Mazursky catches his zade eating his bubbe's herring on the afternoon of Yom Kippur; when Eisner and Katzenberg ask Mazursky if he thinks that the I.B. Singer story (Enemies, A Love Story) is too Jewish... maybe it can be about the Cambodian Holocaust instead of the WWII one; when Richard Dreyfus pulls out of the Enemies project; and the creation of Down and Out in Beverly Hills.

City of Dreams : The Making and Remaking of Universal Pictures by Bernard F. Dick
$30 before 30% off. Hardcover - 344 pages (April 1997). In February 1906 Carl Laemmle, an immigrant and former clothing store manager, opened his first nickelodeon in Chicago. He quickly moved from exhibition to distribution and soon entered the realm of film production. A master of publicity and promotions, within ten years "Uncle Carl" had moved his entire operation to southern California, founded a city, and established Universal Pictures as one of the major Hollywood studios. This is the 90 year history of Universal, which was not one of the "Big Five studios", but held its own as one of the "Little Three."
