Tu B'shvat and Purim Books (Page down for Purim)
Trees, Earth, and Torah: A Tu B'Shvat Anthology by Ari Elon (Editor), Naomi M. Hyman (Editor), and Rabbi Arthur Ocean Waskow (Editor)
Hardcover - JPS, Fall 1999, $30. Collection of resources for Tu-B'shvat, the 15th of Shvat. You can't ask for a better book, since Waskow conducts the best seders on the East coast. The first comprehensive collection of Jewish resources for observing the popular late midwinter holiday of Tu B'Shvat, the Jewish "New Year of Trees." Established in the sixteenth-century by the Jewish mystics of Sefat, this holiday celebrates natural and supernatural renewal, and includes a special seder modeled after the Passover seder. The relationship of humanity with the earth-of adam to adamah-has long been a vital element of Hebrew scripture. Today, the Tu B'Shvat holiday has taken on added significance because of the greening of Israel and the growth of the ecology and environmental movements in the United States and abroad. Trees, Earth, and Torah draws from biblical, rabbinical, medieval, and modern sources-from art, music, recipes, and crafts, as well as fiction, poetry, and essays-about the significance and historical development of the holiday, and includes mystical writings along with Zionist and Eco-Jewish pieces. The anthology also includes several examples of a "Seder Tu B'Shvat," ranging from kabbalistic ritual to a contemporary ceremony that makes the concepts and ideas behind the holiday more tangible.
Torah of the Earth:
Exploring 4,000 Years of Ecology in Jewish Thought
by Arthur Waskow (Editor)
Human responses to the natural world stretching back through the last 4,000 years come to life in this major new resource providing a diverse group of ecological and religious voices. It gives us an invaluable key to understanding the intersection of ecology and Judaism, and offers the wisdom of Judaism in dealing with the present environmental crisis. Both intelligent and accessible, Torah of the Earth is an essential resource and a reminder to us that humans and the earth are intertwined. More than 30 leading scholars and experts enlighten, provoke, and provide a guided tour of ecological thought from four major Jewish viewpoints. Perhaps the most profound Jewish statement about the relationship between human beings and the earth is bound up in two words of Hebrew - two words that do not even need a sentence to connect them: Adam. Adamah. The first means "human being"; the second, "earth." The two words intertwine to teach us that that the human and the earth are intertwined. In Hebrew no one is able to say the name of the earth or of humanity without hearing an echo of the other.
Ecology & the Jewish Spirit : Where Nature and the Sacred Meet by Ellen Bernstein (Editor), Susan Berrin (Editor)
Hardcover - 250 pages (January 1998) Jewish Lights Publishing. Ellen Bernstein is founder of Shomrei Adamah (Keepers of the Earth), the first institution dedicated to cultivating the ecological thinking and practices integral to Jewish life. Bernstein has taught, directed, and developed earth science and nature education programs across the country. Ecology & the Jewish Spirit uncovers Judaism's ecological message, a message which offers us a newfound spiritual approach to the many-faceted world supporting us.This vibrant work brings to light the long-neglected environmental themes that are native to Jewish tradition-themes woven through ancient Jewish texts, the biblical creation story, Jewish law, the cycles of holidays and festivals, prayer, mitzvot (good deeds), and community.
A Tu BeShvat Seder:
The Feast of Fruits from the Tree of Life
by Yitzhak Buxbaum
Paperback - 96 pages (December 21, 1998) Jewish Spirit Publishing
Seder Tu Bishevat:
The Festival of Trees
by Adam, Fisher (Editor)
The Festival of Trees, Tu Bishevat, celebrates nature's rebirth after winter. Seder Tu Bishevat not only marks the observance but celebrates Judaism's appreciation of the larger cycles of nature as the work of God. This volume contains two Seders, both developed to involve young people in the observance. Seder I addresses both adults and children of various ages; Seder II is specifically designed for the understanding and participation of younger children. Seder Tu Bishevat contains more than 20 songs, including Ei-Li Ei-Li, Nitzanim Niru, and the classic Turn!, Turn!, Turn! with complete chording for guitar. In addition to original poetry by Rabbi Fisher, the prayers and selections from traditional sources express a sense of wonder as we encounter nature with an awareness of God's presence in the world. Ideal for congregational use and for families wanting to share a personal experience of nature with their children. Softcover, 98 pages.
