The Philosophy of Homeschooling:
Families homeschool for a variety of reasons. They may not be the same as yours, but they do make interesting reading! Here are some of them.
- Separation of School and State --- You wouldn't send your children to a government run Sunday school, then why send them to the government's Monday school?
- Don't assume that everyone that homeschools is religiously or politically conservative. This thought provoking article comes from a different perspective. I found it at this Canadian homeschooling site.
- The name of this site is School is Dead, Learn in Freedom!™
- My own two cents worth!
- Ten Reasons NOT to Homeschool --- Sadly some people would take these reasons seriously. :-{
- You could sign onto an e-mail discussion list on the politics of homeschooling
- I'm always ready to listen to the opposing view on just about any subject. Knowing the other side of an issue can give you insights on your own beliefs, and can strengthen them as well as change them. Here is a vitriolic rant against homeschooling by someone who was homeschooled in the 60's. Maybe it shows that homeschooling isn't for everyone!
Some of my favorite quotes:
"School is the advertising agency which makes you believe that you need the society as it is."
--Ivan Illich in "Deschooling Society" 1970

"Teaching does not make learning --- organized education operates on the assumption that children learn only when and only what and only because we teach them. This is not true. It is very close to 100% false. Learners make learning."
--Education Reformer John Holt

"To confuse compulsory schooling with equal educational opportunity is
like confusing organized religion with spirituality. One does not
necessarily lead to the other. Schooling confuses teaching with
learning, grade advancement with education, a diploma with competence,
and fluency with the ability to say something new."
-- Wendy Priesnitz
