Identifying Aptiva Models Identify your Aptiva Model

There are three ways that you can determine the exact seven digit model number of an IBM Aptiva PC:

Via the tag on the PC's tower/case
Via Model Information in the system's Setup Utility

Via System Properties in Windows 95/98

(1) The tag on the PC's tower/case

All Aptivas come with a small tag affixed to the tower/case that identifies
both the model and serial number of the unit. Even if the PC is not running
you can get this information from this tag.

IBM locates this tag in different locations on different models. If you cannot
find the tag but you know your four digit machine type you can use the table
below to determine exactly where the tag is on your PC

If you don't know what machine type you have you can either browse through
the illustrations provided and try to identify it or use the alternate methods (2)
and/or (3) below.

Use the chart below to find the model and serial numbers for your Aptiva

(2) Model Information in the system's Setup Utility

Tags can become faded or be removed, but your BIOS is forever
(at least one hopes it will be). Both model and serial numbers can
be found in the system's CMOS/Setup Utility:

When you first start your PC and see the IBM logo screen,
tap the F1 key to enter the Setup Utility.
Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to scroll down to
"Model Information"
With Model Information highlighted, use the [ENTER] key
to view your model and serial number information as well
as BIOS version and BIOS date.
Tap ESC twice to Exit

(3) System Properties in Windows 95/98

While serial number is not given, the fastest and easiest way to
determine model number (assuming the PC is up and running)
is via System Properties in Windows 95 or 98.

Right-Click on the Desktop "My Computer" icon
Click Properties
You will generally find your model number as well
as operating system version on the General tab
