One of the many aspects of being a member of the American Payroll Association, both nationally and locally, is being able to take advantage of all the educational courses offered. The APA offers more than 300 professional seminars and several conferences each year. (Not limited to members)
In addition, APA offers a certification in payroll (CPP). The certification exam is offered biannually. An important benefit of chapter membership is being able to participate in the chapter’s CPP study group. The group leader(s) are active chapter members who have attained their CPP designation. The study group is designed to help members prepare for the CPP exam.
By joining the study group, members can share knowledge and practical hints, as well as set and deep an organized study schedule. As with other activities, by studying with group, rather than alone, you are more likely to stick with the program and complete it to the end. APA statistics have shown that CPP examines utilizing the services of a chapter study group usually score higher on the exam than candidates who choose to study alone.
There is no obligation to join the study group in preparation for the exam. However, by joining, the sense of support from studying with fellow payroll professionals will certainly enhance your chance for success.
If you are interested in joining the chapter’s study group, please contact Marilyn Jacobson, CPP at 215-256-5124 or e-mail mjacobso@harleysvillegroup.com
There are several publications available to assist in the day to day routine of payroll as well as for preparing for the certification exam.
The SEPAC hosts four meetings annually. The meetings are held during the dinner hour. After enjoying a delicious meal, attendees are enlightened with payroll knowledge from the evenings educational speaker.
Also, in conjunction with Montgomery County Community College, the chapter supports APA’s Payroll Professional Learning Series (PPLS). PPLS is a series of three courses over a 26 week period. The courses are: "Basic Payroll Skills," "Essential Payroll Skills," and "Advanced Payroll Skills."
Students may take all three courses or choose the course which best serves their needs. The series will kick off with the "Basic Payroll Skills" in March, 2000.
To further promote education, as part of its treasury, the SEPAC maintains an educational fund. These dollars are used to support its members by annually: Providing the registration fee for a member to attend APA’s Preparing for Year End course; Providing the registration fee for two members to attend the annual Pennsylvania Statewide Conference; Providing a member with a $1000 APA voucher. The recipient can use the voucher to attend any APA seminar or to purchase any APA publication.
