I have been playing clarinet with the Mazeltones for 8 years. I was not very good when I started but I was an accomplished saxophonist--I applied a lot of my saxophone technique to playing clarinet. Because I came from a jazz background, I didn't have some of the problems that classical players have with playing Klezmer. I recommend spending a lot of time improvising in minor keys etc.. and learning to improvise 2-4 beat fills that you can insert here and there in your klezmer tunes. (A little goes a long way)
Shawn's technique tips:
1. The easiest way to achieve superb fingering is: Keep fingers over the keys--especially the pinkies over the G# and Eb/C keys. (should be touching lightly) This prevents the fingers from flying all over the place. Use a mirror and see for yourself.
2. Long tones produce great tone: Nothing else needs to be said---play slow ballads
3. Overtones on clarinet enable you to do the long glissandos and scoops. Most of these are accomplished in the throat. Practice these when the neighborhood pets won't hear you!!
