Pete Chavez and wife Lori Williamson have been raising top show quality English Angoras in Shafter, California for five years. National winnings include Best of Group II and Best of Breed English Angora at the 1996 and 1997 American Rabbit Breeder's Association conventions in Peoria, Illinois and Madison, Wisconsin.
Pictured above is WC's Chardonnay, a chocolate tort English Angora rabbit and daughter to last year's winner, WC's Sedona Sunrise. These rabbits exemplify the best characteristics of long dense matt-free wool on a short and cobby body type.
In addition to exhibition, Pete and Lori also harvest and spin the wool from these lovely creatures (with no harm to the bunny) into a luxuriously soft yarn ready for knitting or crocheting. Angora wool is 7 times warmer than sheep's wool and is not irritating or scratchy to the skin.
The Angora rabbit is thought to have originated in Ankara, Turkey many years ago. Years of specialized breeding have resulted in the evolution of today's domesticated angoras which are raised primarily for wool production and companionship. Gentle and sweet temperments have resulted from the constant attention and grooming that is required to keep the coats in optimum condition.
When judging an English Angora for show, the most essential qualities are a very silky texture and a maximum density of wool on a small cobby body. Beautiful head, ear and facial furnishings is also extremely desireable. Some exhibitors make the mistake of focusing on only improving one or two traits or concentrating on aspects that mean little on the show table such as color. In order to be successful in improving the breed, the exhibitor should focus on as many ideal aspects at a time as they can. It does no good to work on density and texture if there is a bad body underneath. Our endeavors in improving English Angoras have resulted in numerous Best in Shows and Grand Champion rabbits. We believe that we have mastered the characteristics of density and long-lasting finished coats. Our current focus is on developing the consistently silky matt-resistant texture that we have achieved on our most recent national winners. This focus also enhances the quality of the wool used for spinning purposes.
We have fallen in love with these beautiful creatures and we are sure you will too. If you would like more information on English Angora rabbits, please feel free to contact us or visit Angora Rabbit Technical Manual: Angora Rabbit care, breeding, grooming There is a wealth of advice available on grooming, feeding and general care of these animals. Rabbits are among the most endearing housepets. They are easily trained to use a litter box, and can learn tricks and obey commands. Although the long wool of an angora does require special care and attention, the temperment of these curious and sweet-natured bunnies will provide rewarding companionship for years.
Our rabbitry is small in numbers, but we do raise English Angoras for show, spinning and pets. We will have bunnies available from national and Best In Show winning animals early next year. We will be attending the 1998 National Angora Show in Reno Nevada in late April and the 1998 American Rabbit Breeder's Association National Convention in Portland Oregon on October 4-8th. If you are not planning on attending any of these shows, shipping is available.
