In 1951, when Tabitha Craven's great-grandmother turned 100 years old, a financial tool called "credit cards" was introduce to the United States populace.

In 1960 that same elderly woman, who was born into slavery and had seen a large amount of American history, warned her children to be careful of debt and these new things called "credit cards".

Needless to say, her children didn't listen, but her grandchildren and great-grandchildren still benefit from this woman's wisdom.

Tabitha Craven has provided a wonderfully written piece full of knowledge and advice from her great-grandmother who was born into slavery in the mid 1800's, yet endured to become a mother of 12, a grandmother of over 30 grandchildren and a well-to-do business woman during a time of great trial for African-Americans.

Although Tabitha's great-grandmother was born 150 years ago, her knowledge of debt and financial health still applies today.
