DANNY KALB RECENT RELEASES
LIVIN' WITH THE BLUES (Legend Records, French Import) -- is a live solo
recording of Kalb originals and acoustic blues standards by Muddy Waters, Blind
Willie McTell, Jimmy Reed, Lightnin' Hopkins, BE King and others. The 12-song
collection is Kalb doing what he does best. No back-up singers, no session players -
-just the man, the mic, the guitar. This consummate Blues album was produced by
Bruce Barthol, perhaps best known for his work with Country Joe & the Fish.
SOUL OF A MAN: AL KOOPER LIVE (MusicMasters/BMG) -- was
recorded live at the Bottom Line, over 3 nights and 6 shows. This double CD box
set features a reunion with the members of The Blues Project and Blood Sweat &
Tears, and Kooper's current band, The Rekooperators. The highlight ofthis
musical all-star retrospective is Kalb's work with The Blues Project on four of their
classics, "I Can't Keep From Cryin' Sometimes," "Flute Thing," "Two Trains
Runnin'," and "Violets of Dawn." According to Al Kooper, "He is the equivalent
of a John Lee Hooker... They both have had hard lives and both have been
ilnmersed in living the blues... [Danny's] singing gets better and better and really,
the reason why we continue to reunite as a band is that we're proud to play behind
him."
THE PRESTIGE/FOLKLORE YEARS (Fantasy) -- a painstakingly compiled
four-CD set that anthologizes some two dozen artists who recorded for the
influential folk label between 1960 and 1965. Kalb is heard on a total of five cuts:
as a member of 1963's True Endeavor Jug band, The new Strangers in 1964,
both with guitarist, vocalist and producer Samuel Charters (who compiled and
annotated the series); and with the Folk Stringers, again produced by Charters.
THE BLUES PROJECT ANTHOLOGY (Verve/Polygram) -- This year, The
Blues Project's original label will release an extensive multi-disc anthology set.
