QUALITY TIME WITH YOUR KIDS
Yes, we know that this phrase has gotten overused
in the last few years. Just what is quality time? We define quality
time as a time when both you and your kids are simply enjoying being together
and getting to know each other a little better.
Try some of these suggestions:
-
Use everyday chores as a special time together. Have your child help
you with the laundry, or getting dinner ready. This is not a time to
try to make your child perform the chore perfectly; it's a time to chat and
giggle while you work together. Let your child do whatever part they
can handle and enjoy. For example, your child may be too young to wash
the dishes, but just old enough to rinse the silverware and the non-breakable
dishes and put them in the drainer. Be creative!
-
Use some of your errand and shopping time as a special time together. One
mother reports that her four-year old considers grocery shopping their special
time together. Yes, this mother does have to allow extra time to get
the shopping done, but the payback is well worth it. Her son gets to
pick out his cereal for the week, assist in putting some of the groceries
in the cart, and even push the cart when the store is not crowded.
-
Combine exercise time with quality time. Ask you child to ride their
bike around the block while you jog. Ask them to walk with you, or
for the little ones, push them in a stroller. A father reports that
his child doesn't even mind getting up early to be able to exercise with
Daddy.
-
Have your child teach you something. Be attentive. This can range
from a hilarious description from a three year old, to an astonishing learning
experience with a ten year old. Your teenager can teach you some new
slang words, or about the latest rock or new age band, maybe even a dance
step. Be prepared to learn. Your kids know a lot more than you
think they do. Next time they mention something they are really excited
about, ask them to teach you a little more. And pay attention!
HINT: You've probably already figured this out, but all of these
suggestions work beautifully for getting closer to your spouse.
