A warm, calm environment is recommended. I personally suggest using
an undergravel filtration
system w/very fine gravel(so the frog can pass it) or very large gravel
(so they cannot ingest it). You should provide a hiding place for them
as frogs can get skittish if they can't find a place to hide You should
provide at least 10 gallons of water per frog.

* *DO NOT USE DISTILLED WATER* *
I recommend using tap water and adding Kordon
Aquarium NovAqua Instant Conditioner & Fish Protector, or
Kordon Aquarium AmQuel Instant Water Detoxifier. NovAqua
adds protective skin coating plus electolytes and removes toxic metals &
Chlorine, while AmQuel removes Ammonia Chloramines, Toxic Pheromones and
Chlorine. (more info
on water conditions that I personally use with my frogs and goldfish)
Kordon NovAqua Plus Water
Conditioner

Forms a protective coating to reduce fish stress and neutralize toxins.
Kordon
AmQuel

Eliminate the toxins in the water that can be harmful to your fish.
Kordon AmQuel
Plus

Removes nitrate, nitrite ammonia, chlorine and chloramines from fresh or
saltwater, without interfering with the biological
cycle.
Some information states that since African Clawed
Frogs are adapted to stagnant water conditions in their natural habitat,
the keeper should avoid using mechanical or electrical filtration systems
because it is said to produce adverse long term effects on the frogs. It
is said that water movement(even slight) is sensed through the highly developed
lateral line system that these frogs possess and results in severe stress.
I have had these frogs for several years in tanks with mechanical and electrical
filtration systems and my frogs have done well. They have went from
being very small to rather large frogs. As far as water movement, my
frogs will position themselves directly in the water's moving path as if
to receive a massage. (so I guess it's a hard call to make, everyone has
their own opinion on this one particular situation)

Hi, I love your web sight. Have found some things
I never knew and enjoy the stories from other owners. Just wanted to say,
I agree with you on the filters. I have had my female albino frogs for 14
or 15 years (males about 5) with a magnum filter. They have even laid eggs
many times, at least once a month when I do a water change. (A bit worried
that this may be a strain on the 2 older females laying eggs so often.) Do
not seem bothered at all with the filter. Read the other sites on this matter
stating it creates stress and such. Have had others in the past with a non
filtration habitat, they no longer exist. I'm going to go with what works
for my froggys. They are still healthy and doing great. Thanks so much,
Sharon
Metal ions are extremely toxic to these guys! Make absolute
certainty that nothing metal is in the tank or can be splashed upon and dripped
back into the tank's water.
