Again Website: Referred by: Net Search From: Maryland Time: 2000-10-07 21:29:56 Comments: My boyfriend, after some of this research, wants to set up a aquababies tank. Is it possible to put African Dwarf Frogs in with the lil crabs (not sure what they're called)? I have many questions on these lil tikes. I had a 50 gallon filtered tank, but me brother just moved into a new house, and he had bought me a 2 gallon tank in exchange, because the 1 beta just wasn't enough for that big tank....Well anyway, please get back to me. I was wondering if you could tell me what would happen if both froggies turned out to be males? WOuld they fight? and the same with both being females, how would that go too. They are the African Dwarf Frogs... and soooo cute! Thanks, Lani A.K.A. Teddybear:) |

| Name: Zach Website: thanks for info Referred by: Yahoo! From: illinois Time: 2000-09-16 07:03:16 Comments: I have one African Clawed frog named Wilma that I received from my cousin. I also have three kitties, four green anole lizards, and two ferrets. Anyway, my frog is about 8 yrs old and lives in a 20 gallon hexagonal tank. She Lives in my room and sings me to sleep with her pretty songs at night. Her favorite foods are goldfish (rosies), guppies, mealworms, earthworms, and slugs. Every morning when I wake up I see her goofy face staring at me as if she is saying "Good morning!". And when I turn on her light, she darts into her little rock cave I constructed for her and waits for me to feed her. I expect to get a male companion soon for her. I also want some Dwarf Clawed frogs (definitly not in the same tank as the big ones). Anyway, your site has helped me a lot with my frog, and to anyone who thinks these African Clawed frogs are boring, you should reconsider. Thanks again and good luck to anyone with their pets. Bye! -Zach |

I have raised my male from a tadpole and I just did purchase my female from a local pet store. The female is albino. They are great. I am 10 years old and love my frogs very much. I would say that both of them are close to the same age. The male I know turned from tadpole to frog on about March 20th of 2000,he is now singing at night and has very distinctive black front legs and feet. the pair seem to be hugging alot but I have read that they are to young to be sexually mature yet. They are only 5 monthes old.. |

They seem happy, healthy and extremely horrny. Which brings me to an intersting question i have talked to people who have said that when in need these frogs can change there sex to reproduce....do you know anything on this issue? cause you see both my frogs who started out as Ernest and Gertrude are now knowen as Gert and Ernnie, are of the homosexual nature. and i know this as a fact b/c they clearly have black pads on there hands and forarms. im curius if i should go out and find them two female compainons or just let nature take its course. although i must say that it is wounderful having two males b/c they both call out to each other and it is so neat to be laying in bed at night and hear them (actually you can hear them anywhere in my house lol) its like i am sleeping out doors. thanks terah btw i use an electrical filtration and mine seem to be just great, i also have flouresent lighting and only feed them blood worms. |

Peckels Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Chicago Time: 2000-07-05 09:57:43 Comments: My wife and I have had our African Clawed Frog Herman since April, 1987. We lived in St. Louis back then. I had visited Tuscon, Arizona on a business trip back in 1986 and stopped by the gift shop at the hotel where I was staying to find something for my son (who at that time was 11 years old). I spied a "Grow a Frog" kit, hastily read the information on the box and bought it as soon as I read that at least the frog wasn't in the kit! The kit was packed away later that year just before we moved to our present house in Vernon Hills, a "village" located 60 miles northwest of Chicago. While unpacking, I ran across the frog kit and sent the coupon to the Three Rivers Amphibian Reasarch Company (then in Massapequot, Ney York). Little did I realize that our lives would change when we received the tadpole in the mail about 2 weeks later! You see, we thought that we were getting an ordinary tadpole that Jason (our son) could see develop into a frog and we could turn it loose in a nearby lake. Well. when we got the tadpole, only then did I take the time to read more about this little critter. To my shock, I found that this was no ordinary frog - it was an African Clawed frog that can live up to 15 years!! Well, that was over 13 years ago, and we've had Herman ever since then. When he was about 2 years old Herman developed a mouth infection. I called Three Rivers who advised me that Herman MIGHT be cured with tetracycline, keeping him in the dark, and feeding him only tiny bits of chicken liver. Well, Jason promptly put up a large cardboard sign around the aquarium that said, "Herman in Quarantine!" - and within a week Herman was as good as new. It turned out that a neighbor had tried to feed him bread while we were on vacation, and a bacteria (or fungus) resulted from that. Needlees to say, we always request that the friendly neighbor only feed Herman floating reptile food sticks from then on! We also learnded from that incident that the aquarium gravel that we had in Herman's 5 gallon tank was not appropriate because he might eat it. So, with the cure from the mouth disease also came a change in housing - no gravel; the only objects that "decorate" Herman's home are a little porcelain frog and a small piece of petrified wood from Arizona (very appropriate considering that I got the kit in Tuscon!). Herman's been very alive and very healthy ever since that time. The only food we ever give him is the reptile floating food sticks, and his water only gets changed once every 4 to 5 MONTHS- he likes it that way. He eats from my hand - sometimes he grabs my finger and I pull him a little out of the water. Jason got married a few weeks ago (he's 24), but he still gets a kick out of seeing Herman every so often when he visits us. We are not empty nestres though - we have 3 dogs and 3 ferrets besides our ling-lived Herman! Life at the zoo is never dull!! You have a wonderfully complete, informative and interesting web page! How long have you had African Frogs as pets? Is it true that they can actually live for 30 years and more??? Sometimes when I feed Herman, he dashes wildly around and around the tank like he's crazed! Is this normal? Do you have any tips for keeping Herman healthy (I must have been doing things right so far)? Sometimes Herman isn't fed for a week or longer, but nothing happens - he just lies at the bottom of the tank motionless. Is this OK? I would really like it if you'd please respond to my long email. I look forward to hearing from you. Don |

How can I tell if my frog is a he or a she? I know that some male frogs have brown patches, but how can you tell when it's an Albino. What would happen if you put an Albino with another African Frog? I would like to receive e-mail from you when you have other cool stuff on African Clawed Frogs. Have a great frog day! |

They have never mated before the month of February, 2000. They have now produced 4 different batches of eggs in one month! 100 plus eggs each time. We have saved about 180 of the tadpoles so far. The 4 week old one have black eyes, very thick tails and dark spots on each side of their tails. We think it is their legs. We are feeding them powered eggs and changing their water every day. It is alot of fun seeing what they will do next! We plan to sell them to a local pet store. We wonder why they didn't mate before now. The female is about 6 inches tall and 2 1/2 inches wide. The male is half her size. He does have the black under his arm/ the mating marks. We take the tadpoles out of the main tank as soon as possible. We use a turkey baster. Everything seens to be going well. But we wonder how many more are they going to give us before they take a break? |

He has grown from a tiny little half inch long hiding frog into a 5 inch long eatin' king of the aqauarium. My question is, I feed him occasional feeder guppies, but mainly reptomin sticks. He finds them ok, but either he is blind, or retarded, or both. He can be right on top of food, tries to eat it, but can't seem to find it, but seems to smell it. Is this normal for this type of frog? Thanks. MIKE |

(I got them from my nephew who couldn't keep them when he moved.)I think they're both about 2 years old now. I've only had them since Christmas '99. I've read that it's difficult to observe them mating. Zeus and Abdul-ah mate about ALL THE TIME!! I've scooped out some of the eggs but haven't managed to keep them alive after hatching for more than just a couple of days. Until now ! I have finally succeeded in keeping one of their babies alive for 21 days now. I named it Casper. I am being VERY VERY careful with Casper. It doesn't have any sign of legs yet, though. And I've read that they go from egg to frog in about 40 days!? I'll try to keep you updated. Thanks! |

I have just purchased what I believed was an albino dwarf frog. The pet store employee said it would be fine in really warm (82 degree) water. I need to call the store because, thanks to you, I relize its and albino african clawed frog. Its about 1 1/4 inches and isnt taking to my improper (for a dwarf) food. Its in a terrarium which is a 20- long and is heated by a 50-watt incandescent light and a hagen tronic heater. Their are some crickets and a house gecko in the tank. A 20-watt flourescent light illuminates the tank. It has 3 inches of water and I was gonna add some kribensis(fish) to the tank. Now i know i should not. I will add another inch of water, any more and the gecko will lose much deserved slate area to sit on. Please e-mail me at pentiumpunk@hotmail.com and give me some well-appreciated advice, if possible. THANK YOU. |

I felt sorry for them so up graded to 2 gallon plastic tank with pump and light. About a week later the frog died. I was told to check the ph it was to high. Sooo I'm now adjusting the ph so I can get another. I guess the African dwarf frog is the best for this aquarium?? We really enjoyed watching the frog when we had it . |

It was a project one of the teachers do and she ask for me one since she knew I loved my pond and green frogs and fed them in the summer. This little girlfrog, I think, is a treasure. The way she darts up and floats down is so funny. I would love to have another for company for her, but would be afraid of too many babies! I put her in with gold fish and a divider so she doesn't become supper. Would floating airation plants help? Thanks! Love this site! |

They are doing very well. The female ate my first male, we got her one that is older, (and larger) than she is, and now he's constantly trying to mate her. Always get her backwards, though. I'm sure he'll learn. Using an Eclipse tank with a large log hiding place, no plants. Gravel, mechanical and chemical filtration system. Maybe too small, 15 gallons, approximately? Any suggestions? Feeding goldfish, beefheart, bloodworms, krill. Most likely will have babies. Not real interested in babies, suggestions?? |

We watched him change into a clawed frog. As t.j. was changing his tail became shaped like a C he now has a scoliosis. We believe he may be blind. He has difficult finding his food. We tap onto the window glass he will came to the top. If he feels the food stick hit the water, he will grab it. If not he feels around for the food. I believe he came not see because of the way he searches with his hands and misses the food a lot of the time. Otherwise he has been a great pet and the kids have learned about the way frogs and other species change Thanks jodi harville |

It is wiser to check out for yourself than to regret, isn´t it? Aquarium dealers specialize mainly in fish, naturally, so you can´t always rely on the information they give you. I got my African clawed frog from my brother about a week ago and the Internet with its many frog sites has been of great help (not to mention my brother...) in setting up my "frogiarium". |
