DARK SKIES OVER THE JERSEY PINELANDS RANGE...
One reason for the growing popularity in amateur astronomy throughout the South Jersey region is the clear, dark night-time sky found in this part of the state, especially during certain times of the year. This area has already become a center for "eco-tourism," and each fall and spring, tens of thousands of birding enthusiasts gather around the Cape May area to witness the annual migration of ducks, geese and other species of birds. Thousands of acres have been set aside as protected wetlands and wildlife refuges, and despite the proximity to Philadelphia and other urban areas, South Jersey still retains a unique rural character. That's good news for wildlife, conservationists, the people who live here -- and amateur astronomy!
The SJAC observing site is located in Belleplain State Forest in northern Capte May County. Getting to Belleplain is easy; and there are over 11,000 acres of forest here, along with camping and recreational facilities. Belleplain also provides some of the best views of the night sky, free of the harmful light pollution which characterizes many urban areas.
There's also some fascinating history and folklore about the area, too. The Belleplain State Forest facilities were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps program during the 1930s. But even before that, local lore tells us that the Jersey Pinelands Range was populated by some other interesting characters romping around as well, such as the famous Jersey Devil. We haven't seen this fellow yet -- but the dark skies of Belleplain provide some of the clearest views of the stars, planets and other objects which amateur astronomers enjoy viewing!
