Star Party faq

I KEEP READING ABOUT STAR PARTIES. WHAT ARE THEY?

A Star Party is just an outdoor gathering of astronomy enthusiasts, and usually includes at least one evening (if the weather is good!) of observing. These events take place in locations where the sky is dark, away from metropolitan areas and the glare of city lights. Some Star Parties have become big attractions with hundreds of visitors, vendors and contests; others are more informal. All that's really required to attend is a curiosity about astronomy and the sky!

DO I NEED TO BRING A TELESCOPE?

No, but most people who own one do. Star Parties have become venues for amateurs to "show off" their equipment in a good-natured atmosphere. But if you are new to astronomy, a Star Party is an excellent opportunity to check out the different kinds of telescopes, prices and other feature before you buy one. Even if you don't own a telescope, people are often willing to share their views of the night sky; and the SOUTH JERSEY STAR PARTY will feature the club's own 16" Dobsonian telescope for everyone to look through.

DO I NEED TO BE A MEMBER OF SJAC, OR ANOTHER ASTRONOMY CLUB, IN ORDER TO COME TO THE STAR PARTY?

No... but we encourage you to join an astronomy club in your area. When you're done checking out information about the Star Party, head over to our LINKS page for a listing of other clubs in the region. Or, you can JOIN the South Jersey Astronomy Club.

DO I NEED TO CAMP?

No, but since the best part of the Star Party occurs at night, this is the most convenient way to enjoy the events, socialize, and get the most out of your visit. Check out our information page about the South Jersey Star Party for you options.

DO I NEED TO BRING FOOD?

Some food may be available and there is a concession stand near the camping and observing areas, but you can bring your own. There are some reastaurants within 15-30 minutes driving time of Belleplain State Forest. Be sure to check out the information page. And remember, you must obey the regulations about open fires and cooking. Fires are permitted in the campground areas nearby, but not on the main observing field. Be sure to check our updates about the Star Party for more information about catered food at the event.

WILL THERE BE BUGS? WHAT ABOUT CLOTHING OR OTHER PREPARATIONS?

At this time of year, bugs (including the infamous Jersey mosquito) are not a major problems. We do recommend bringing bug spray along, though, and even sunscreen for day use. Evenings are cool, so bring warm clothes, and rain gear just in case. The weather is generally pleasant, and even a rain storm can move through the area fairly fast and be followed by clear skies. So, our best advice is -- be prepared.

ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW?

Be sure to read our information section about the South Jersey Star Party, especially our section of RULES OF THE ROAD. Common sense and courtesy (like not playing loud music, or shining car lights on the field at night) prevail, and help to ensure an enjoyable Star Party for everyone. If you have further questions, feel free to contact us! We look forward to seeing you at the South Jersey Star Party!
