COFFMAN, HENRY AND MAULDIN PACE TURKEY BOWL III WINNERS
Mini Sprints, Modified Midgets, Quarter Midgets and Outlaw Karts by Gary Jacob
Stockton, CA....Nov 16........After earlier capturing his heat race, veteran Fresno area racer Scott Coffman wheeled to victory in the feature race for the Modified Mini Sprint 600 class as Delta Speedway closed it’s season Sunday night with the rain delayed Turkey Bowl III. The event had been scheduled as a two-day show on Nov 8-9, but rain stopped those dates and the rescheduled date was a marathon one day show for seven divisions to avoid a Saturday conflict with Vallejo Speedway2. The champion of the track’s recently concluded Six Shooter Series, Rick DeCosta, chased Coffman to the win with Ryan Cook in third. A top modified midget pilot before he advanced into the winged 360 sprint car action, Mike Henry returned to his roots and drove through the entire field to win the Stock Mini Sprint 600 feature. Rick Cook Sr and Kent Stephens chased Henry across the finish line. The winner of the special Plaza Park-Lemoore Shootout Series in September, Scott Mauldin continued his success with wins in his heat and the feature for the Modified Midget 250s. Idaho’s Randy Pierce was second ahead of Six Shooter Series champion Bob Edwards. The track races two restricted mini sprint 600 classes. Johnathan Henry won the 3/4 restricted main ahead of Myles Bishop while Ryan Bernal won the 5/8 restricted feature over Connor Adams. The quarter midgets were added to the track’s schedule in 2003 and the finale had their best turnout with 18 cars in action. Ryan Rector beat dash winner Shane Golobic and Dustin Golobic in that main event. The Box Stock outlaw kart action found Tyler Carey the winner over Matthew Mullins.
The modified mini sprint 600 class split 29 cars into three qualifying heat races with the top five finishers in each advancing into the A Main. Coffman beat Dean Reedley and Stephanie Claycomb in heat 1 while DeCosta won heat 2 over Brandon Johnson and Brandon Carey. Ryan Cook then won heat 3 in front of Dave Engstrom and Chris Veach. Johnson was the dash winner with DeCosta second ahead of Ryan Cook. That left five positions available for transfers from a 13 car B Main. John Bordenave won the B Main ahead of Rick Cook Sr, Thomas Leiby, Derrick Overkamp and Bryan Campbell with Steve Bishop and John Toste just missing transfers. The three heat winners dominated the A Main action with Coffman winning ahead of DeCosta and Ryan Cook. Scott Pierovich came from deep in the field to run fourth ahead of Reedley, Veach, Johnson, Idaho’s Bob Grice, Carey and Leiby.
There were 22 Stock Mini Sprint 600’s and Henry missed the heat action, forcing him to start at the rear of their feature race. Double division racer Coffman won heat 1 ahead of Cook Sr and Ryan Rusconi. Stephens beat Kirk Barber and car builder Dean Alexander in heat 2. Double division Brandon Carey won heat 3 over Alfred Galedrige and Chase Barber. Cook Sr beat Barber and Stephens for the dash honors. Henry put on a show in the feature as he drove through the field to win ahead of Cook Sr, Stephens, Alexander, Steve Bishop, Carey, Barber, Coffman and Cameron Veach. Stephens had been the Six Shooter Series champion.
The modified midget 250 class split 14 cars into a pair of heat races. Mauldin won the first ahead of Jackie Whitson Jr and Mark Ramich. Idaho’s Randy Pierce won heat 2 ahead of Edwards and Jeff Vick. Edwards was the dash winner ahead of Whitson Jr and Pierce. Mauldin ran last in the dash, but won the main event as Pierce settled for second in front of Edwards, M Ramich, John Sveenson, Whitson Jr, Brad Williams and Richard Luhdorff.
There were 10 entries in the Mini Sprint 600 3/4 Restrictor class. J Henry won the first heat over M Bishop and Brandon Davis. Kayla Evans and Brent Bjork were 1-2 in heat 2 and Bjork was the dash winner over M Bishop and J Henry. J Henry added the feature win with M Bishop second ahead of Davis, K Evans, Brittany Evans, Lucas Neverlove and Quinn Mulrooney. J Henry was the Six Shooter Series champion. Only three cars appeared in the Mini Sprint 600 5/8 Restrictor Class. Devon Reib won both the heat and dash, but Bernal was the feature winner over Six Shooter Series champion Connor Adams and Reib.
The 18 Quarter Midgets were split into a pair of heat races. Rector won heat 1 over Bryce Hylbert and Kevin Shaw. D Golobic beat brother S Golobic and Darren Elby in heat 2. S Golobic took dash honors with Hylbert second ahead of Rector. In the main event, it was Rector winning ahead of S Golobic, D Golobic, Jake Haulot, Andrew Elson, Shayna Sylvia, Mariah Delora and Ryan Chepeta. The 7 Box Stock outlaw karts ran in a single heat race with Tyler Carey the winner ahead of Cody Eskew and Mullins. Pole starter Justin Wilson won the dash over Carey and Mullins. Six Shooter Series champion Carey then won the feature race ahead of Mullins, Wilson, Tyler McCleary, Travis Leuellen and Samantha George. Eskew broke in the dash and scratched from the main event.

COOK AND HENRIQUES SCORE VALLEJO WINS
By, Mark Sublett
11-22-03 Vallejo, CA.......Veteran open wheel driver Rick Cook (600cc) and young Tyler Henriques (250cc) scored the next to last Modified Midget main event wins at Vallejo Speedway Saturday night. Cook used an inside move on newly crowned Track Champion Brian Hemman in heavy lapped traffic to take the three hundred dollar 600cc main event win. Henriques passed early leader Steve Ramich to go on to post the convincing 250cc win. The Steve Hazelton promoted Vallejo Speedway 2 will close its doors after five years of operation at the Solano County Fairgrounds after next weekends November 28-29th Thanksgiving weekend race. Fairgrounds management have decided to use the land for equestrian events and other uses forcing the closure.
At the start of the fourteen car 600cc main event pole sitter Hemman took the early lead over Nichole Miller. Rick Wilson raced third with Rick Cook fourth after lap one was complete. Cook quickly put the pressure on third running Wilson for the third spot and maneuvered past by lap ten. Hemman continued to lead up front with Miller a close second. Cook now raced third with Wilson fourth. Young gun Al Madison moved up from eighth starting to race fifth followed by Brian Campbell in sixth, Derek Overkamp raced seventh, Billy Aton eighth, Troy Passama ninth and Richard Brace Jr. rounded out the top ten. As Hemmen continued to race out front Cook caught Miller and raced past to take second after halfway. Several spins and minor skirmishes slowed the action past mid-way. After a long green flag run late as Hemman approached lapped traffic, Hemman choose the highline as did the lapped car allowing a small opening that veteran Cook quickly took advantage of to take the lead. Hemman made quick work of the lapped cars to run down Cook in under track record lap times but Cook held off all challenges to take the win. Hemman finished a close second followed by Miller in third. Campbell raced fourth followed by Craig Martignoni, Brace Jr. and Madison completed the 30 lap distance. Heat races were won by Hemman, Cook and Wilson. Miller won the trophy dash.
Steve Ramich took the lead at the start of the eight car 20 lap 250cc Modified Midget main event trailed by Tyler Henriques early. Richard Luhdorff raced third followed by Jim Gotelli, two time and defending track champion Cliff Harrison, Mark Ramich, Mark Pyle and John Zinck. An early accident eliminated Harrison with front end damage. When racing resumed S. Ramich held the lead with Henriques right on his rear nerf bar in second. Henriques got a good run entering turn one and raced under S. Ramich exiting turn two to take the lead. Henriques stretched his lead in the final laps to win. S. Ramich raced second followed by M. Ramich, Luhdorff, Zinck, Gotelli, Pyle and Harrison. Henriques won the heat and the trophy dash was won by Harrison.
Other main event winners on the night were Victoria Marie Rosa in Beginner Box Stock. Jr. Outlaw went to Brittany Jolicoeur with Don Holleran taking the Speedway Kart win. Double division driver Billy Aton won the 500cc Kart main with the 125cc Kart win going to Matthew Davis. Racing at Vallejo Speedway 2 will come to a close with the running of the first Thanksgiving weekend two day event November 28-29th.

HEMMAN AND BECK SCORE PAULSON CLASSIC WINS
By, Mark Sublett
9-27-03 Vallejo, CA....For the second year in a row both Richie Beck and Bryan Hemman won the annual "Roger Paulson Classic" held at Vallejo Speedway 2. The event is held in memory of longtime Northern California Modified Midget racer Roger Paulson from San Jose who lost his life to the sport in 1999. Beck spun early in the 38 lap 250cc Modified Midget main held in honor of Paulson's car number, but raced his way through the field to win by a straight-away. Current track point leader Hemman took the lead at the start of the 600cc Micro Midget main and never looked back to post the dominating 30 lap win. The event was sponsored by Ken & Richie Paulson, M&M Photos, Bob Rosa and Vallejo Speedway 2.
At the start of the 4th annual 38 lap "Roger Paulson Classic", pole sitter Tyler Henriques jumped out to the early lead. Vallejo Speedway 2 veteran Derek Overkamp raced second with Matthew Vazquez third early. Vazquez got by Overkamp to race second as fifth starting Richie Beck did the same a lap later. Beck quickly caught Vazquez and the two battled for the runner up spot. As the duo raced into turn three they touched causing both to spin bringing out the yellow flag. Both restarted at the tail of the field. At the restart Henriques held the lead with Overkamp racing second with John Svensson now third. Racing went non stop for many laps that saw Beck move his way through the pack to race his way to the front by lap 25. Beck used an inside move on race leader Henriques coming off turn two to take the lead and proceeded to pull away to score the win. Henriques finished second followed by Overkamp in third racing a car Roger Paulson once wheeled. Svensson finished fourth followed by Vazquez in fifth. Cliff Harrison raced sixth followed by Jarrid Carter, John Zinck, Jim Gotelli, Tyler Davis and Brandon Davis rounded out the field.
Fifteen cars started the 30 lap 600cc Micro midget main event with current track point leader Bryan Hemman from Manteca taking the early lead. David Engstrom raced second followed by Ralph Cortez and Travis Passama in the top four on lap one. Hemman was on a rail racing his way into lapped traffic by lap ten. Second running Engstrom bobbled allowing Cortez, Travis Passama, Troy Passama and Rick Wilson to race past by midway. Troy Passama fell back to seventh but put on a show coming back to race by young gun Al Madison then Engsrtom en route to his way back into the top five by lap twenty. Second running Cortez had mechanical trouble causing him to stop in turn two. Cortez restarted the event. At the restart Hemman held a solid lead until the checkered flag flew. Troy Passama passed younger brother Travis after a great battle late to take second with Travis third. Engstrom finished fourth in a photo finish over second in track points Wilson who finished fifth. Shane Golibic recovered from an early tangle to race sixth over Madison, Cortez, Nichole Miller, Charlie Kemp, Gareth Weaver, Teri Marie DeCarlo, Kortnie Bell, Rick Davenport and Erica Lucas rounded out the field.
Promoter Steve Hazelton informed the crowd that the Fairgrounds will not renew the Speedway’s contract and this will be the final season for Vallejo Speedway 2. Hazelton is looking for a site to re-locate the Speedway.

After finishing second at Plaza Park, Dean Alexander took the series point lead in the modified mini sprint 600’s with his Lemoore win ahead of Anthony Kerber and quarter midget graduate Michael Trimble. ANOTHER DOUBLE WIN NIGHT FOR YOCKEY
Mini Sprints, Modified Midgets and Junior Sprints
by Gary Jacob
Visalia, CA....Sept 6.......Just a week after he scored a pair of $1800 wins in the Lemoore Grand Prix, Fresno race car builder Stan Yockey enjoyed another two win night as Plaza Park Raceway opened the two track, four weekend Central Valley Shoot Out Series Saturday night. The series will move back and forth between the Visalia and Lemoore tracks on Saturday nights through the entire month of September. Yockey outraced fellow race builder Dean Alexander in the modified mini sprint 600 feature with Ryan Cook third. In the Stock Mini Sprint 600 feature, Yockey was chased to the finish line by young Kody Swanson and Alexander again. It was a big night for the two sons of veteran oval track racer Mike Swanson as Tanner Swanson won the restricted mini sprint 600 main event ahead of Cory Eliason and Justyne Hamblin. Because the series includes Lemoore, the modified midget 250s made a rare Plaza Park appearance and San Jose’s Scott Mauldin scored a clean sweep with Jackie Whitson Jr second in the feature in a duel with his sister Kristina Whitson. The Junior Sprints rounded out the action with a big 17 car field and Dustin Rhodes took the feature win ahead of Jordan Silva and Shane Myhre.
The modified mini sprint 600 class drew 12 entries and Roger Rose beat Yockey and Chad Boespflug in heat 1. Cook outraced Alexander and quarter midget graduate Michael Trimble in heat 2. Trimble won the dash ahead of Jared Little and Cook with both Yockey and Alexander scratching from that event. The feature race had a zero inversion and Yockey raced to the win ahead of Alexander, Cook, Kevin Barnes, Rose, Boespflug, Trimble and SoCal long tow Adam Householder. Cook came out of the night with a 5 point lead on Yockey and 10 ahead of Alexander as the series moved to Lemoore on Sept 13. There were 17 stock mini sprint 600’s but Eric Correia and John Heinrich saw their nights end in hot laps. Jake Hagopian beat Yockey in heat 1 with Kirk Wilson the heat 2 winner ahead of double division racer Rose. Dean Alexander won heat 3 in front of K Swanson and Householder. Rose beat K Swanson and Yockey in the dash. The main event had a four car inversion and Yockey was the feature winner ahead of K Swanson, Alexander, Kent Stephens, Householder, Quinton Sall, Barnes, Boespflug and Hagopian. Conflicts with his 360 sprint car effort will keep Yockey from chasing the series title, but he came out of night one with a 1 point lead on K Swanson and 19 ahead of Alexander.
The 12 restricted mini sprint 600’s were divided into a pair of heat races. Eliason beat Robby Josett and Jace VanderWeerd in heat 1 while Michael Cavalli won heat 2 over Tanner Swanson and Justyne Hamblin. T Swanson beat Hamblin and Eliason in the dash. The feature finish found T Swanson winning ahead of Eliason, Hamblin, Josett, Jenna VanderWeerd and Richard VanderWeerd. T Swanson took a 6 point lead over Eliason into the round 2 action at Lemoore as Hamblin stood 15 points out of first. The modified midget 250’s had six cars and Mauldin won the heat race over J Whitson Jr and K Whitson. Mauldin then beat Lemoore champion Duane Soares in the dash. In the feature, it was Mauldin on top of J Whitson Jr, K Whitson, Jeremy Smith, Soares and Mike Dean. With his big night, Mauldin built a 20 point lead on both J Whitson Jr and K Whitson. The 17 Junior Sprints were split into three heat races. Brittney Snow beat Trent Carter in heat 1 and J Silva won heat 2 over Myhre. Steven Kent won heat 3 with Brittney Turner second. J Silva beat Kent and Rhodes in the dash. This feature had an 8 car inversion and Rhodes raced to the win ahead of J Silva, Myhre, Justyne Hamblin, Kent, Allisen Cochran, Snow, Mark Cypert and Dalton Silva. J Silva scored the most points and stands five ahead of Rhodes and 17 in front of Kent heading into round 2 at Lemoore.

by Gary Jacob
Chico, CA....Sept 1......After a second place heat run, long time Cycleland Speedway star Ray Michelet Jr raced to victory in the main event Monday night as the mini sprint 600’s and modified midget 250’s joined the big QRC All Star Tour action at Cycleland Speedway. R Michelet Jr was racing in the mini sprint 600 class and modified midget 250 star Derek Overkamp chased him across the finish line. At the end of the race, Overkamp was dropped in the standings as he had lost his muffler during the action. That moved Jerome Crismon into second place overall and first in the 250 class. Jarrid Carter drove his 250 to third and Ray Michelet Sr ran second in the 600 class with his 4th place overall.
The six mini sprint 600’s and five modified midget 250’s were divided into their own heat races. David Engstrom won the 600 heat ahead of Michelet Jr and Ron Singh. MCQUEEN WINS PLAZA CHAMPIONSHIP
By Paul Vetter
Visalia, Ca....August 29, 2003......The point season ending event at the Plaza Park Raceway saw the crowning of four new track champions in their respective classes. Two of the new champions also won their class feature event for the evening putting an exclamation point on their season long efforts.
The story of the night was in the Multi 600 class as a pair of lady drivers, former track champion Audra Sasselli and Shannon McQueen entered the evening separated by only 24 points going into the final event. With three visiting Idaho drivers, the eleven car field found Sasselli along side pole sitter Scott Martin for the 30 lap feature. Martin led the first pair of laps before bobbling in turn two which allowed Sasselli, veteran Stan Yockey, double duty racer Kody Swanson and McQueen to pass with Martin falling to fifth.
Idaho’s Larry Jackson spun for a yellow on lap five and Kevin Barnes slowed on the backstretch on lap seven to slow the drive by Sasselli. While Sasselli and Yockey led the field, Swanson and McQueen were having their own great battle for third as the race was destined to go the final 23 laps without another slowdown. Swanson finally garnered the spot near the halfway mark. Leader Sasselli and Yockey knifed through lapped traffic at will with the Sasselli taking the win ahead of Yockey, Swanson, McQueen, and Idaho’s Mike Jackson. McQueen’s finish earned her enough points to win the overall championship by eleven points ahead of Sasselli. The track point champion has also announced the sale of her potent machine to Modesto’s Kent Stephens while she takes another step up the racing ladder. Her first USAC Midget appearance will come in September at the Bakersfield (Ca) Speedway.
Repeating his championship winning performance from last season, fourth year racer Kody Swanson captured the 20 lap Stock 600 feature. A short field of cars saw Swanson led the entire event in nonstop fashion with Eric Westra chasing to no avail in second. The interesting battle between Jason Okajima and newcomer Kirk Wilson concluded with Wilson in third ahead of Okajima. Both Tanner Swanson and Justyne Hamblin removed the restrictors off their engines and competed but both were a lap down at the finish. Swanson’s championship was celebrated by a large entourage of fans in the stands and his entire pit crew following the event.
Not to be outdone by his older brother, Tanner Swanson beat out declared champion Justyne Hamblin for the 20 lap Restricted 600 feature event. The pair, who battled all season long for the championship, started on the front row with Swanson outdragging pole sitter Hamblin on the green for the top spot. Newcomer Jordan Casey pitted before Barona Speedway visitor Kelsey Newman and Michael Cavalli banged together on the front stretch with Newman out of the event with bent race car parts. Dace Taylor fell victim to the two spin rule with five laps remaining.
Swanson ran on to the win ahead of Hamblin who earned the overall track season championship. Cory Eliason finished third ahead of a whole slew of VanderWeerd racers, Jace, Richard and Jenna. There were nine cars finishing the event, all on the lead lap.
The Junior Sprints had eleven cars in action and Mitchell Faccinto set fast time to set the tone for the evening. The diminutive driver had the championship wrapped up before the feature started and he led all 20 laps for the win. Long tow Shane Myhre settled into second behind Faccinto with Steven Kent and Dustin Rhodes chasing. Rhodes worked his way around Kent for third on lap eight in the nonstop event. With Faccinto and Myhre nose to tail out front, Kent utilized lapped traffic to retake the third spot from Rhodes in the late stages of the event. Faccinto, Myhre, Kent and Rhodes were followed by Kolby Araki, Justin Brown and Alexandria Raiskup on the lead lap.
The Central Valley Shootout between Plaza Park Raceway and the nearby Lemoore Raceway will run every Saturday in September. Plaza’s events are set for September 6th and 20th with the Lemoore pair running on September 13th and 27th. Full fields of cars are expected to battle for the prestigious title for the Multi 600, Stock 600, Restricted 600, and Junior Sprint classes.

Driving a brand new PMP Chassis 600 mini sprint that was just a bare frame at noon on the day of the race, veteran Stan Yockey raced to victory at Plaza Park Raceway Friday night. Bakersfield’s distaff driver Shannon McQueen piloted her way to victory in the Multi 600 class while Tanner Swanson captured the Restricted 600’s, both aboard PMP cars. Second generation racer Steven Kent took the win in the Junior Sprint division.
Double duty racer Kody Swanson, returning from a jarring heat race flip in the Multi class, put his rebuilt Stock racer into the lead in the 30 lapper by beating fast timer and pole starter Doug Nunes into the first turn. Yockey, who started third moved around Nunes for second on lap two with four starting Jake Hagopian into fourth. Class point leader Swanson’s sparkling drive was overshadowed by Yockey who took over the top spot on lap twenty, as Hagopian had moved into third ahead of a fading Nunes.
With the lapping process going on in earnest, Swanson came close several times in his attempt to regain the top spot from Yockey. Not to be denied, Yockey ran on to the win while crowd favorite Swanson came home in second ahead of Hagopian, rookie Rodney Jared and Nunes.
The expected battle in the Multi 600’s between current point leader Audra Sasselli and McQueen, who is just two points in arrears, never materialized as third starting McQueen took over the first place spot from pole sitter Doug Moles on lap two. Sasselli fell back with a broken header while the aforementioned Kody Swanson was on a mission after starting ninth. The teenager took over the third spot from Sasselli on lap seven, was into second around Moles on lap eight and began putting the pressure on leader McQueen, all while using the quick upper groove.
McQueen changed her line to the high groove and held off Swanson’s advances. Despite breaking free of lapped cars late in the event, McQueen ran on to the 30 lap win with Swanson second ahead of Moles, Craig Kleinhans and Sasselli as lead lap cars.
Not to be outdone by his older brother, young Tanner Swanson made a complete sweep of the Restricted 600 class. Swanson won his heat and trophy dash while nemesis and current point leader Justyne Hamblin was in a new car and won the second heat. The pair lined up on the front row of their 20 lap feature and Swanson jumped out to an immediate lead. Hamblin and Richard VanderWeerd ran two-three while Swanson increased his lead.
The event was destined to go nonstop with early dropout Jordan Casey pulling into the infield early and fourth running Cory Eliason lost a chain with only a pair of laps remaining to fall into the did not finish status. Swanson, Hamblin and R. VanderWeerd were followed by Jenna VanderWeerd and Michael Cavalli on the lead lap.
In the Junior Sprints, fast time went to Shane Myhre, who with his family makes a three hour tow from Twain Harte to compete each event. Third generation racer Cody Key won his heat along with Mitchell Faccinto, another third generation driver. Steven Kent, whose father Steve still competes in the 410 and 360 full sprint divisions, won the trophy dash.
The 20 lap feature got off to a rough start as both Alexandria Raiskup and Carson Macedo flipped in turn one, unhurt with both returning to the event. Myhre led from his pole position starting spot to lead Kent, Faccinto, and Dustin Rhodes. Key faltered and pitted at the halfway mark as Myhre led through lap sixteen. Both Kent and Faccinto got around Myhre for the top two spots with four laps remaining in the event. Kent ran on to the victory followed by Faccinto, Myhre, Rhodes, and a pair of Bakersfield racers Austin Manzella and Justin Brown. Raiskup, MaKenzie Zinger and Macedo ran lead lap in the event.
Making up an early season rain out, the final point event of the season at Plaza Park Raceway will be held Friday night.

by Gary Jacob and Don Low
Visalia, CA....August 15.......After a four car inversion placed her on the pole for the 30 lap main event, Bakersfield’s Shannon McQueen was never headed as she collected a wire to wire win in the Modified Mini Sprint 600 class Friday night as Plaza Park Raceway opened the two-night Giant Automotive Summer Clash. Seventh starting Craig Kleinhans advanced to 2nd in 14 laps and finished there ahead of Scott Martin. The Stock Mini Sprint 600 class had a six car inversion and Chad Boespflug debuted a new Pace Chassis by racing from 4th starting to the lead in four laps. He then fought off the challenges of fast timer Kody Swanson over the final 25 laps to collect the win. K Swanson ran second ahead of Paul Javaux. A four car inversion in the Restricted Mini Sprint 600’s put Tanner Swanson outside front row. He grabbed the lead at the green flag and was never headed in that 20 lapper. Fast timer Justyne Hamblin was a race long second with Lemoore star Michael Faccinto placing third. The Junior Sprint 20 lapper ended on a lap 19 red flag when San Diego visitor Taryn Rowles flipped end for end several times. Mitchell Faccinto gained the win over Jordan Silva and Britney Turner. Boespflug went underneath Yockey for second on lap 3 and he took the lead from Alexander on lap 4. Jake Hagopian spun for a lap 5 yellow and Alexander had to pit with a flat left rear tire. The final yellow flag fell on lap 27 as Mattos spun. Javaux moved up to third and chased winner Boespflug and K Swanson to the checkered flag. Reeves ran fourth ahead of Eric Westra and Chase Mack, the final lead lap finisher. Wilson was the final car running at the checkered flag, one lap down in 7th.

Mini Sprints and Junior Sprints by Gary Jacob and Don Low.....Visalia, CA...August 8......Third starting Audra Sasselli passed pole starter Shannon McQueen on lap 18 and won the 30 lap modified mini sprint 600 main event Friday night at Plaza Park Raceway. The two female racers are dueling for the track championship and the point season ends on August 22. The 30 lapper was slowed by just one yellow flag and Anthony Kerber ran third. The stock mini sprint 600 30 lapper saw point leader Kody Swanson with a wire to wire win from his outside front row start. Earlier, K Swanson had a night full of seconds as he timed in second quick and placed second in both his heat and the dash. Roger Rose was second in the 30 lapper ahead of Ryan Reeves. Having briefly lost the lead in the middle of the race to Tanner Swanson, restricted mini sprint 600 point leader Justyne Hamblin won the 20 lap main event with T Swanson second ahead of Jenna VanderWeerd. Mitchell Faccinto pulled off a rare clean sweep in the Junior Sprint action as he set fast time and posted wins in the dash, heat and 20 lap feature. Kolby Araki was second in the feature with Shane Myhre third. Sasselli won $200 and the other three winners pocketed $150 each.
With the two-day Giant Automotive Summer Clash happening on August 15-16, the modified mini sprint 600 car count improved to 15. Todd Hirasuna posted fast time with his 10.87 run. Sasselli came from third to win heat 1 over 2nd starter McQueen. Pole starter Scott Martin won heat 2 over Rose and Hirasuna. T Swanson came from 4th to take heat 2 over front row starter Laura Lopez. This division drew a straight up start that put T Swanson and Hamblin in the front row ahead of R VanderWeerd and Jenna VanderWeerd. This 20 lapper also had two caution flags. Hamblin led the first lap over T Swanson and Jenna VanderWeerd. An inside move gained T Swanson the top spot on lap 6 and Hamblin was challenging to retake the lead when Tyler Turner got into the fence for a lap 8 yellow flag. Up front starting spots were the key to success Friday night in the four classes of open wheel racing at the Plaza Park Raceway. Over fifty cars raced with Anthony Urias, Kody Swanson, Justyne Hamblin, and Steven Kent the victors on the “one fast fifth mile” clay oval.
Veteran Urias paced all 30 laps in the Multi 600 mini sprint feature from his pole starting spot. Tough luck Kevin Barnes fell out on the opening lap with a flat while female driver Shannon McQueen fell into the second spot. Driving like a man possessed, Urias was up to every McQueen move and led the entire event in nonstop fashion. Scott Martin ran third early and finished there with the top five being rounded out by Todd Hirasuna and Craig Kleinhans. Twelve of the fourteen starters finished the event.
The most exciting feature of the evening was the 30 lap Stock 600 mini sprint event. Although dominated by front row starting drivers Kody Swanson and Stan Yockey, the action was tough and exciting to watch. Yockey jumped out front early after Eric Correia hooked an infield tire on the opening green and dropped out. Swanson was second with Chad Boespflug, in a new car, into third. The sixteen car starting field saw Yockey begin the lapping process at the ten lap mark. Young Swanson chased the veterans every move around the lappers and in a great move took over the top spot on lap twenty just before Jason Mattos and Dean Alexander tangled their way to the rear of the field.
Swanson led the field on the restart and Yockey made one final attempt to pass on the final lap. Swanson was up to the charge and put another lapped car between himself and Yockey at the checkers for the well deserved victory. Swanson’s family cheering section is easily one of the largest and they cheered loudly when the checkers fell. Boespflug finished third ahead of Jake Hagopian who has moved up from the Restricted class, and Adam Householder who started tenth in the field. Fifteen cars finished the event.
With new one lap record holder Justyne Hamblin starting on the pole for the feature, the suspense was gone as she led all 20 laps for the Restricted 600 feature win. The youngest of the Swanson boys, Tanner tried to no avail to put pressure on the fleeing female star but was unable to mount a major challenge. Dace Taylor spun on lap five and pitted with Michael Cavalli moving into the third spot.
Coming down for the checkers, Cavalli lost a right rear tire and spun collecting fifth running Cory Eliason in the process. The finishers shuffled around the duo with Hamblin and Swanson already past the scene for first and second. Jenna VanderWeerd ended up in third followed by Laura Lopez and Richard VanderWeerd.
The Junior Sprints did not quality tonight and the heat races went to Mitchell Faccinto and Shane Myhre, who also returned to take the trophy dash win. The eleven car 20 lap feature saw front row starter Steven Kent take the lead on the opening lap with Myhre into second. Front row starting Alexandria Raiskup settled into fourth behind Mitchell Faccinto before MaKenzie Zinger spun on lap five and dropped out. Kent paced Myhre until lap fourteen when Faccinto moved into the second spot. Dustin Rhodes and Kellen Araki scattered infield people with an excursion into no man’s land on lap sixteen for a yellow. Kent led the final four laps for the win ahead of Faccinto, Myhre, Raiskup, and Allisen Cochran.

DOUG MOLES AND STAN YOCKEY WIRE TO WIRE WINNERS AT PLAZA PARK
Mini Sprints and Junior Sprints by Gary Jacob
Visalia, CA....July 25.......Gaining the pole for the 30 lap feature when the inversion came up a six, heat winner Doug Moles led all the way to win the modified mini sprint 600 main event Friday night at Plaza Park Raceway. Fellow front row starter Craig Kleinhans was a race long second and Audra Sasselli ran third ahead of Ryan Cook. Fresh off a feature win at Washington’s Clay Cup, Stan Yockey returned to Plaza Park action by leading all 30 laps of the stock mini sprint 600 main event from the pole. This division had a straight up start and fast timer Yockey had a near perfect night with a dash win and a second in his heat. Third starter Kody Swanson ran second ahead of Chad Boespflug, who was in a borrowed car. Fourth starting Justyne Hamblin worked her way to the lead in just 3 laps and won the 20 lap restricted mini sprint 600 main event with early leader Tanner Swanson second ahead of Cory Eliason. Gaining the top spot when pacesetters Mitchell Faccinto and Dustin Rhodes tangled, Steven Kent paced the final 11 laps to win the 20 lap Junior Sprint main event. Newcomer Cody Key ran second over Kolby Araki.
The modified mini sprint 600 class fielded 12 cars and female racer Shannon McQueen from Bakersfield paced time trials with a 11.01 lap. That nipped the 11.03 posted by Scott Martin and Ryan Cook. Sasselli turned a 11.17, C Kleinhans a 11.31 and D Moles a 11.35. Moles won the first heat from an outside front row start with female star Sasselli second. Former quartermidget star Scott Pierovich from Northern California joined the Plaza Park action and won heat 2 from the pole as C Kleinhans ran second. McQueen and Sasselli drew the front row for the dash and Sasselli won with McQueen second ahead of D Moles. All 12 cars appeared for the 30 lap feature with the fastest six inverted in the front. Long tow visitor Chris Veach pitted before the green flag. D Moles took a quick lead over C Kleinhans, Sasselli, Cook, Martin and McQueen. The sixsome ran the entire 30 laps in that order. Buddy Shelton pitted on lap 7 and Heather Moles stalled for the only yellow flag on lap 18. D Moles ran flawless for the win with C Kleinhans second ahead of Sasselli, Cook, Martin and McQueen. Also finishing lead lap were Pierovich and Kaylyn Kleinhans.
Yockey was the quickest of the 11 stock mini sprint 600’s with his 10.91 run. Boespflug ran a 10.97 lap, Jake Hagopian a 10.98 and Kody Swanson posted an 11.01. After running a 11.12 lap, Jason Okajima flipped on his second round. Ryan Reeves won the first heat from the pole with Boespflug second. Adam Householder also turned a pole start into a win in heat 2 over Yockey and Okajima. Yockey and Boespflug shared the front row for the dash and Yockey won with Boespflug second. This feature had a straight up start and Yockey raced into the lead over third starter Swanson and Boespflug. Eric Correia pitted on the first lap and Scott Martin, Reeves and Jason Mattos tangled for a lap 2 yellow. Correia returned, but pitted again on lap 3. Okajima settled into fourth ahead of Householder. Hagopian grabbed fifth from Householder on lap 7, but broke a chain for a lap 10 yellow. Householder regained fifth, but lost the spot to Doug Nunes on lap 12. Nunes had problems late in the race and stalled for a lap 28 yellow flag. Car builder Yockey was flawless as he raced to the win ahead of Swanson, Boespflug, Okajima, Householder and Nunes.
The track requires that a division have 10 entries to run time trials, so the 9 restricted mini sprint 600’s ran draw heat races. Hamblin won heat 1 from an outside front row start with pole starter Eliason second. Outside front row starter Richard VanderWeerd won heat 2 with fourth starting Tanner Swanson second. Eliason and R VanderWeerd had the front row for the dash and Eliason won with Hamblin second. This 20 lap feature had a four car inversion off the heat results. Pole starter Swanson led the first 2 laps with Hamblin using an inside pass to take second from Eliason on lap 2. On lap 3, Hamblin then drove an inside line under leader Swanson for the top spot. Dace Taylor pitted after spinning for a lap 3 yellow flag. The final 17 laps were run without a yellow and Hamblin stayed out front with Swanson in second ahead of Eliason, R VanderWeerd, Jenna VanderWeerd, Jace VanderWeerd and Mieka Cochran.
Mitchell Faccinto was the quickest of 14 Junior Sprints with his 14.44 lap. Rhodes ran a 14.55 lap, Kent a 14.60, fast improving Justin Brown a 14.66 and Kolby Araki a 14.67. Outside front row starter Shane Myhre won heat 1 with Alexandrea Raiskup second over Rhodes. Faccinto came from 4th to win heat 2 with pole starter Key second. Faccinto drew the pole for the dash and won with third starter Myhre second over 4th starter Rhodes. The fastest four that placed in their heat action were inverted at the front of the grid for the 20 lap feature, putting Kolby Araki and Kent in the front row ahead of Rhodes and Faccinto. Kolby Araki led the first lap, Rhodes nosed in front on lap 2 and they finished lap 3 side by side. Rhodes nosed back out front on lap 4 with Kolby Araki falling back to fourth behind Faccinto and Kent. Faccinto used a high line to take the lead from Rhodes on lap 9. Rhodes hit Faccinto and ended up in the infield. Faccinto stalled wheile Rhodes kept running. The officials penalized Rhodes to join Faccinto in the rear for the restart and Kent paced the final 11 laps for the win. Key ran second over Kolby Araki, Myhre and Allisen Cochran. Improving Makenzie Zinger fought off the challenges of Faccinto to finish sixth. Rhodes ran 9th behind Raiskup.

He was rewarded with a pair of feature wins as he won his usual class ahead of point runnerup Jason Rogers and Kelin Fipps. In the Modified Mini Sprint 600 action, Boespflug was chased to the checkered flag by Todd Miller and Justin Danell. Having closed on the point leaders with three wins and a second in June, Michael Faccinto got the July portion of Lemoore’s schedule off to a fast start with another feature win in the Restricted Mini Sprint 600 action. The entire VanderWeerd clan ran 2-3-4 with Jenna in second ahead of Richard and Jace. A strong field of invaders gave the Modified Midget 250 class a 11 car field and visitors ran 1-2 with Jackie Whitson Jr beating sister Kris Whitson in the main event. Point leader Duane Soares was third. Mitchell Faccinto has raced his way into the Junior Sprint point lead and he added another feature win ahead of Dustin Rhodes and Britney Snow.

Front row starting positions were the prime spots to be Friday night as all four feature winners at the Plaza Park Raceway can attest. Mitchell Faccinto (Jr. Sprints), Justyne Hamblin (Restricted 600), Chad Boespflug (Stock 600), and Travis Coelho (Multi 600) came from front row spots to capture their respective feature events. Lower than normal car counts did not detract from the quality of racing on the 1/5 mile well prepared oval.
The 13 car Junior Sprint field started without Nicholas Buchant but the other 12 drivers put on a great show for the fans. Faccinto, who earlier had set fast time, jumped out front from the pole and was never headed in the event, leading all 20 laps for the win. Contact on lap one in turn four saw heat race and trophy dash winner Jordan Silva upside down but unhurt in a wild looking flip. Alexandria Raiskup also failed to return for the restart. Faccinto led the restart ahead of Shane Myhre with Austin Manzella and Dustin Rhodes battling for the third spot.
Allisen Cochran pitted on lap seven while Rhodes had moved around Manzella for third one lap earlier. With the event destined to go nonstop, Faccinto ran on to his tenth overall feature win of the year ahead of Myhre, Rhodes, Manzella, and Austin Brown. MaKenzie Zinger had her best run of the year for sixth with nine cars finishing the event.
The Restricted 600 class saw a short field of cars with only two drivers winning in the four events held. Both Michael Cavalli and Justyne Hamblin won heats with Cavalli returning to take the trophy dash. Hamblin’s front row start saw her jump out to the lead over Cavalli who fell out on lap six. With Hamblin way out front, the battle behind her saw Cory Eliason take over second followed by Tanner Swanson. Another nonstop feature of 20 laps saw Hamblin take the victory over Eliason and Tanner the only lead lap cars. Mieka Cochran, Dace Taylor, and Kaylyn Kleinhans ran were one lap down at the finish.
The Stock 600 class was also down on cars with Chad Boespflug the dominant driver. Making a clean sweep of the field, the front row starting spot again worked to his advantage as he led all 30 laps of the feature event. Kody Swanson settled into the second spot early and finished there as double duty driver Travis Coelho ran third with Chase Mack the only other lead lap car. Visitors Dereck Ohlsen, late arriving Adam Householder and Jason Okajima rounded out the field.
Racing in both 600 divisions, Travis Coelho returned to take the Multi 600 feature event again leading all 30 laps of action. Craig Kleinhans closed on the leader in the final laps of the nonstop affair to no avail with Coelho taking the checkers in fine fashion. Kleinhans ran a race long second to finish ahead of Justin Danell, defending track champion and trophy dash winner Audra Sasselli, and Knute Mynderup. Double duty Adam Householder and Kevin Barnes trailed with a returning Rex Jorn the only dropout of the event.

Racing topless on a warm summer evening at the Plaza Park Raceway, the male and female drivers competing in the Wingless 600’s mini sprint class took off their top wings for the night. The popular class competed along with the USAC Ford Focus Midgets on the “One Fast Fifth Mile” clay oval track. (See USAC press release for results).
A very competitive field of 27 non winged 600’s had Anthony Urias setting fast time before Shannon McQueen, Adam Householder, Stan Yockey, and Urias took the heat events. Following a tangle and non injury flip in his heat race, Kody Swanson returned to win the semi main ahead of Paul Javaux and Eddie Alberti, Jr. which saw the top six cars transfer to the rear of the 22 car feature starting field.
Southern California’s Adam Householder started on the pole with veteran Greg Bragg returning to the track where he is many times track champion and winner of numerous main events. Amazingly, third starting Dean “Kiwi” Alexander led the opening pair of laps ahead of Householder with Bragg and Stan Yockey swapping back and forth for third and fourth. Alexander brought out the first yellow with a damaged sterring on lap two. Householder led through lap ten with the yellow flying for a stalled Larry Thompson. The restart saw contact between Yockey and Bragg entering turn one with Bragg in the pits and Yockey restarting in the rear.
The standings really got shuffled around on the restart with Anthony Kerber looking good and leading ahead of seventh starting Ryan Reeves, fast timer Urias and Householder. Just past the halfway mark of the 30 lap event Kerber pitted from the lead putting Reeves into the top spot with Householder back into second as Urias had spun himself out of contention. Defending track champion Audra Sasselli was in and out of the race with throttle linkage problems with fellow female ace Shannon McQueen silently working her way into the top three.
The final yellow flew on lap 24 as Kerber and Chase Barber hooked bumpers putting both out. Reeves led the final laps to the twin checkered flags and victory ahead of Householder, McQueen, rising star Kody Swanson, and Northern California’s Brian Gard. Fifteen starters finished the event.

MIKE THOMAS AND DOUG NUNES WIN LEMOORE FEATURE RACES
Mini Sprints, Modified Midgets and Junior Sprints
by Gary Jacob
Lemoore, CA....June 28......On the weekend in between their own Palace Indian Casino Nationals and the Outlaw Nationals at nearby Plaza Park Raceway, car counts were down at Lemoore Raceway but the action was still intense. Veteran racer Mike Thomas from Porterville won the modified mini sprint 600 feature ahead of Roger Rose. Doug Nunes beat veteran Bobby Snow in the stock mini sprint 600 main event and Robby Josett outraced both Michael Faccinto and Justyne Hamblin in the restricted mini sprint 600 main event. Runaway point leader Duane Soares had a clean sweep in the modified midget 250 action with a pair of heat wins and the main event triumph. Mitchell Faccinto had a near perfect night in the junior sprint action with a feature win following a win and a second in the heat race action.
This year, Lemoore has implemented a two heat race format. The first heat race is straight up off the draw and the second completely inverted from the draw. The drivers with the best combined performance in the heat races start in the front of the main event grids. The modified mini sprint 600’s had only a four car turnout with Thomas and Rose trading 1-2 finishes in the two heat races. In the main event, Thomas beat Rose and Todd Hirasuna as Brandon Johnson failed to finish. The stock mini sprint 600’s fielded 11 cars and Snow had the best heat race performance with a pair of wins. Nunes combined a win and a third while no other driver had a combined finish total of less than six. Skip Sisson was a main event scratch and only five of the ten starters survived to see the checkered flag in this action. INCREDIBLE COMEBACK WIN FOR JUSTYNE HAMBLIN
Mini Sprints and Junior Sprints by Gary Jacob and Don Low
Visalia, CA....June 27.....After leaping from third starting to the lead on the first lap, Audra Sasselli paced all 30 laps to win the Modified Mini Sprint 600 feature at Plaza Park Raceway on Friday night. Shannon McQueen took second from Kevin Barnes on lap 12 and made it a 1-2 female finish with Barnes in third. Outside front row starter Ryan Reeves outraced Travis Coelho for the top spot on the start, then paced all 30 laps to win the Stock Mini Sprint 600 feature. When Doug Nunes spun in an incident with a lapped car on lap 27, Adam Householder inherited second and finished there ahead of Kody Swanson. Justyne Hamblin fell to the rear of the Restricted Mini Sprint 600 field with a half spin on lap 3, but the rim riding female star thrilled the crowd as she battled back to win the 20 lap feature for that class with an outside pass on Tanner Swanson on the final lap. The Hamblin win completed a clean sweep as she earlier won both her heat and the dash. Outside front row starter Mitchell Faccinto led all 20 laps to win a caution free Junior Sprint main event. Dustin Rhodes ran a distant second and Shane Myhre was third.
Plaza Park time trials this year, but a division has to have ten entries to get the runs against the clock. The Modified Mini Sprint 600 class fielded just 7 cars this week. Outside front row starter Barnes won the heat race with pole starter Heather Moles second ahead of Sasselli. McQueen and Sasselli drew the front row for the dash and McQueen beat Sasselli in the race. The main event lineup was straight up off the heat finish and Sasselli powered past both Barnes and H Moles on the first lap for the top spot. McQueen took third from Doug Nunes on lap 2 and Doug Moles grabbed fifth from H Moles on lap 8. McQueen powered underneath Barnes for second on lap 12, but she could only chase Sasselli to the win as this 30 lapper ran without a caution. Barnes ran third ahead of Nunes and D Moles, the finale lead lap finisher. H Moles was a lap down in sixth and Brandon Johnson dropped out.
Coming off a big win in the Palace Indian Casino Nationals in Lemoore the previous weekend, Chad Boespflug paced time trials for the 12 Stock Mini Sprint 600 entries with his 11.36 timed run. Kody Swanson ran an 11.50, Doug Nunes a 11.54 and Householder an 11.56. Rob McMillan made a rare appearance, but trailered after time trials. K Swanson came from 4th to win the first heat in a photo finish over Reeves. Nunes came from third to win heat 2 ahead of pole starter Coelho. Reeves then charged from third to take dash honors ahead of fifth starter Boespflug. This 30 lap feature had a six car inversion based on the timed runs putting Coelho and Reeves in the front row ahead of Householder, Nunes, K Swanson and Boespflug. Reeves charged into the lead at the drop of the green flag and Nunes went inside Coelho for second on lap 4. Householder claimed third on lap 6 and Eddie Alberti Jr stalled for the first yellow on lap 7. K Swanson was now fourth. Johnny Simoes spun for a lap 14 yellow and Larry Thompson spun for the final slowdown on lap 16. Boespflug briefly gained fourth on lap 15, but lost the spot back to K Swanson on lap 18. Reeves continued to command the race. Second place Nunes banged wheels with the lapped car of Simoes on lap 27 and spun to fall back to fifth. Reeves won with Householder second ahead of K Swanson, Boespflug, Nunes, Alberti, Coelho and Eric Westra, the final lead lap finisher.
The Restricted Mini Sprint 600’s split nine cars into a pair of heat races. Outside front row starter Hamblin won heat 1 over Cory Eliason. Third starter Tanner Swanson won heat 2 ahead of outside front row starter Jenna VanderWeerd and Dace Taylor. Jenna VanderWeerd and Hamblin drew the front row for the dash and Hamblin won with fourth starter Eliason second. The lineup for the 20 lap feature was a four car inversion based on the heat finishes. Third starter T Swanson took a quick lead over Jenna VanderWeerd and Hamblin. Hamblin was attempting an inside pass on Jenna VanderWeerd when they bumped wheels and Hamblin half-spun. Hamblin fell to the rear of the field as Eliason gained third ahead of Jace VanderWeerd. Hamblin ran outside of Richard VanderWeerd for fifth on lap 7 and ducked underneath Jace VanderWeerd for fourth a lap later. Outside passes on Eliason and Jenna VanderWeerd gained Hamblin the second spot on lap 16. Just when it appeared that Hamblin wasn’t going to run down leader T Swanson, Jenna VanderWeerd, Eliason and Taylor tangled to force the only yellow flag. Eliason dropped out late and Hamblin pulled alongside T Swanson at the white flag. Hamblin put the crowd on it’s feet as she made her winning move on the final lap. T Swanson ran second ahead of Jace VanderWeerd and R VanderWeerd. Michael Cavalli was a lap down in fifth ahead of Taylor.
The 12 Junior Sprints time trialed for the first time. Dustin Rhodes took fast time honors with a 14.44 lap. Mitchell Faccinto clicked off a 14.49, Myhre a 14.57 and Steven Kent a 14.58. The two heat races used an invert four format off the timed laps. Faccinto came from fourth to win heat 1 over Kent. Outside front row starter Kolby Araki won heat 2 with fourth starter Rhodes in second. Araki and Kent drew front row for the dash and Kent won with Myhre second. The feature was straight up off the time trial runs putting Rhodes and Faccinto in the front row. Faccinto won the first lap duel and was never headed in the caution free run. Rhodes was a race long second and Myhre took third from Kent on lap 12. Faccinto’s quick pace left just six cars lead lap at the checkered flag with Justin Brown in fifth ahead of Araki. Austin Manzella was 7th ahead of Allisen Cochran and Alexandrea Raiskup.
Next up at Plaza Park Raceway is the annual Outlaw Nationals on July 3-5. Divisions with up to 24 cars will be racing for $1,000 to win, 25 cars would make it $1,500 to win, 40 cars $2,500 to win, 60 cars $3,500 to win and 80 cars $5,000 to win. Entries are expected from throughout the western half of the United States.

TWO FEATURE WINS AND A SECOND FOR THE BUSY STAN YOCKEY
Mini Sprints, Modified Midgets and Junior Sprints by Gary Jacob and Don Low
Lemoore, CA....June 20-21.......With $1,200 on the line for the feature winners, veteran car builder and racer Stan Yockey did triple duty at the Palace Indian Casino Nationals at Lemoore Raceway. Yockey scored feature wins in both the Modified Mini Sprint 600 and Modified Midget 250 main events and added a second place run to young Chad Boespflug in the Stock Mini Sprint 600 main event. Runaway track point leader Scott Martin ran second behind Yockey in the modified mini sprint 600 main event with Craig Kleinhans third. The stock mini sprint 600 class had the largest turnout with 24 cars and Boespflug won that feature ahead of Yockey and Plaza Park star Kody Swanson. Yockey hasn’t raced in the Modified Midget 250’s in recent years, but he outdueled Bay Area racer Scott Mauldin that payoff with Jackie Whitson Jr third. Michael Faccinto outdueled female ace Justyne Hamblin for the restricted mini sprint 600 win. Jake Hagopian tagged the field after missing the Friday night action and ran third. A win and a second in the heat action put Dustin Rhodes at the front of the Junior Sprint feature and he charged to a win ahead of Jordan Silva and Dalton Silva. At Lemoore, each division races a double set of heat races to determine the feature lineup. At the Palace Nationals, the heat action occured on Friday night with the big money feature races on Saturday night.
The modified mini sprint 600 class drew 16 cars and Anthony Kerber earned the pole by combining a win and a second in his two heat races. Yockey won the main event with Martin second ahead of C Kleinhans, Rogers, Alexander, Kevin Barnes, double division racer Adam Householder and Ryan Reeves. Joseph Ribero was a main event scratch and three of the feature dropouts were disqualified from their finishing spots for not weighing in after the race.
The large stock mini sprint 600 class ran the double set of four heat races each. Several drivers got a five when their two heat races were added together, but only two beat that mark. Dean Alexander earned the pole by combining a win and a 2nd while visitor Chase Barber used a win and a third to share the front row for the main event. Heat winners included Donnie Rose Jr, Paul Javaux, Kent Stephens, Alexander, Ryan Reeves, Householder, Boespflug and Barber. Reeves was disqualified from his feature finish for not weighing in after the race.

Jenna VanderWeerd earned the pole by winning her heat races from first starting and last starting. Usual Plaza Park only racer Tanner Swanson was second best with a win and a second while Michael Faccinto combined a pair of seconds. Robby Josett had a win and a third. Usual division dominator Hamblin struggled on Friday night with a 3rd and a 4th, but was Faccinto’s stiffest competition in the feature race. Faccinto won ahead of Hamblin, last starter Hagopian, Jace VanderWeerd, Cory Eliason, T Swanson and Derek Henderson. Tyler Costa appeared on Saturday and ran 8th while Jenna VanderWeerd and Josett were the only two cars to not finish the main event action.

KLEINHANS AND SWANSON BROTHERS ALL GO WIRE TO WIRE AT PLAZA PARK
Mini Sprints and Junior Sprints
by Gary Jacob and Don Low
Visalia, CA....June 13.....After racing to third place finishes in both his heat and the dash, fourth fast qualifier Craig Kleinhans turned his pole starting position into a wire to wire feature win in the 30 lap modified mini sprint 600 main event Friday night at Plaza Park Raceway. A big first lap incident reshuffled the lineup and new outside front row starter Shannon McQueen passed Lemoore point leader Scott Martin on lap 2 and finished second with Martin third. The race ran with just a single caution flag after the big first lap incident. Kody Swanson earned the pole for the 30 lap Stock Mini Sprint 600 main event by posting fast time and he ran away to the feature win with Lemoore point leader Chad Boespflug second ahead of Paul Javaux. Javaux moved forward from fifth starting and claimed third on lap 10. Only a second in the dash marred the night for Restricted Mini Sprint 600 star Tanner Swanson. He won his heat race from third and ran second to Kaylynn Kleinhans in the dash. He was a wire to wire winner in the main event from the pole position. Michael Cavalli was second in the 20 lap main event ahead of Kleinhans. Both Tanner and Kody Swanson are sons of long time Madera Speedway star Mike Swanson and grandsons of another famous racer Bill Swanson. Mitchell Faccinto lined up on the pole of the 20 lap Junior Sprint feature, but fell to third on the first lap. He battled back to second on lap 7 and took the lead from Steven Kent on lap 11. Faccinto added to his dash win with the 20 lap feature win with Kent second ahead of Dustin Rhodes.
Stan Yockey was quickest of the 14 modified mini sprint 600’s in time trials with his 11.01 lap. That easily paced the 11.37 turned in by Martin and the 11.46 of Anthony Urias. Kleinhans was fourth quick at 11.47. The heat action uses an invert four lineup and Knute Mynderup won heat 1 from the pole with outside front row starter McQueen second. Australian car builder Dean Alexander won heat 2 from the pole with fellow front row starter Audra Sasselli second ahead of Urias. Sasselli drew the pole for the dash and won with third starter Yockey second ahead of front row starter Kleinhans. The feature lined up 13 cars as Tim Raiskup blew in his heat race. The lineup was an invert 4 off the qualifying times, but Mynderup, Doug Moles, Kevin Barnes, Heather Moles, Todd Hirasuna, Urias and Yockey were all involved in the first lap melee. The race was over for both Barnes and Yockey. The lineup for the restart put Kleinhans and McQueen out front of Martin and Sasselli. Kleinhans charged into the lead with McQueen getting underneath Martin on lap 2 to claim second. Urias was working the bottom groove in his challenge of Alexander for fifth. Urias gained fifth on lap 5. Urias spun for the last yellow flag on lap 17 and both Alexander and D Moles pitted. Kleinhans, McQueen, Martin and point leader Sasselli ran 1-2-3-4 from lap 2 on with H Moles getting around Mynderup on lap 20 to finish fifth. Hirasuna and Buddy Shelton also finished lead lap with Mynderup a late race lap victim.
Kody Swanson outtimed 11 Stock Mini Sprint 600 entries with his 11.70 mark. The time was later tied by Travis Coelho. Also breaking into the 11’s were Boespflug at 11.76 and Eric Westra with a 11.94. Again the heat races were invert 4’s with third starter Westra winning heat 1 over Coelho. Pole starter Javaux won heat 2 with K Swanson in second. Coelho drew the pole for the dash and won with back row starter Boespflug second ahead of outside front row starter K Swanson. The main event was straight up off the timed runs and all 11 cars started. K Swanson took a quick lead over Boespflug and Coelho. Skip Sisson pitted on lap 1 and Larry Thompson went out a lap later. Westra settled into fourth and Javaux took fifth from Fred Galante on lap 3. Galante spun for a lap 5 yellow. Javaux used inside passes in turn 1 to take fourth from Westra on lap 9 and third from Coelho on lap 10. Chase Mack went out at the midway mark and the field raced the final 25 laps without a caution. Point leader K Swanson won ahead of second ranked Boespflug, Javaux, Coelho and Westra. Jason Okajima was a lap down in sixth ahead of Johnny Simoes.
The Restricted Mini Sprint 600 class split 7 cars into a pair of heat races. Tanner Swanson came from third to win heat 1 with pole starter Kaylyn Kleinhans second. Outside front row starter Cavalli won heat 2 with Cory Eliason second. K Kleinhans drew the pole for the dash and won with fourth starter T Swanson second. This main event was straightup off the heat finishes and had just a single caution flag. T Swanson won in wire to wire fashion ahead of Cavalli and K Kleinhans. The 7 cars raced in order for the 20 lap distance with Eliason fourth ahead of Laura Lopez and Mieka Cochran. Dace Taylor finished 3 laps down in 7th. T Swanson took the point lead from the absent Justyne Hamblin with his performance.
The Junior Sprints split 11 cars into a pair of heat races. Outside front row starter Kent won heat 1 with third starter Dustin Rhodes second. Third starter Shane Myhre won heat 2 ahead of fellow second row starter Faccinto. Faccinto drew the pole for the dash and won with Rhodes second. This feature had a four car inversion off the heat results and the scratch of Nicholas Bachant left 10 starters. Faccinto lined up on the pole, but got passed by both Rhodes and Kent on the first lap. Rhodes led two laps, then Kent took over. Faccinto settled into third ahead of Myhre and Allisen Cochran. Kolby Araki claimed fifth on lap 3. Faccinto drove underneath Rhodes for second on lap 7 and raced alongside leader Kent for a couple laps before making his winning pass on lap 11. Myhre then used an outside pass to take third from Rhodes on lap 13. The 20 lapper ran without a caution and point leader Faccinto won ahead of Kent and Roades who retook third from Myhre on the last lap. Second ranked Myhre ran fourth ahead of Araki, Cochran and Austin Manzella, the final lead lap car.

The track added a regular point show on June 14th to the schedule and the big $15,000 Palace Indian Casino Championship race on June 20-21 will pay $1,200 to win in any class that fields 20 cars. With nearby Plaza Park going dark that weekend, the 20 car field should be achieved in most divisions.

Jolicoeur, Bell, and Lopez Dominate

6/7/03...Vallejo Speedway2: Fast females are a big part of the Vallejo Speedway2 program, and Sat results prove it. Brittnee Jolicoeur dominated the Jr Outlaw main event, leading 16 of 20 laps. Kortnie Bell, who started the season with doubts of racing in 03, led all 20 laps in the 125 Outlaw class. Felicia Lopez, in her first appearance at VS2 in the 03 season, took up where she left off last season hammering out a win in the 100 Yamaha class.
The Beginner Box class grows each week with more families getting their children into racing. Matt Carpoff is now joined by his sister Lauren in the 99 car. Samantha Murphy is also a new addition to the class. Tracy Durbin grabbed the lead for the first two laps, before Murphy took over to lead on lap 3 and led the rest of the way. Caughman moved into second on lap four, and spun on lap 8, giving the spot to Morgan Jolicoeur, who was rim riding. Nataly Solis took over the third position on lap nine, to make it an all female finish for the top three. Since switching to treaded tires, Solis is under a lot more control of the car, and improving. At the checker the finish was: Murphy, Jolicoeur, Solis, Durbin, Schmidt, Rosa, Caughman, L. Carpoff, M. Carpoff
Nineteen Jr Outlaws were on hand, creating a need for a B main, with two transfer spots to the A main. Troy Foulger and Chris Schroder filled the back row of the main. Fourteen Jr’s roared to the green flag led by Samantha George and Mike Mendez.. At the completion of the first lap Jenn Winingar hit the turn 4 wall, did a complete 360, and continued, but brought out the yellow. Lap 2 saw a contact between Rich Winingar and Chris Schroeder, sending Schroeder to the back. Eleventh starting Brittnee Jolicoeur was on a charge to the front making a daring no fear pass between two cars on the front straight to take the lead on lap 4. Her laid back driving position took her to the checker, chased by R Winingar, Schroeder, Davis, Stornetta, Bennett, Hickson, Foulger, Johnson, George, Mendez, Bidon, and J. Winingar. Chris Schroeder and Joe Stornetta came from the back to the pack after spins on laps 2 and 4 respectively to finish in the top five.
Kortnie Bell started the season with thoughts of participating or not. She had ridden motorcycles since she was very young, and broke into racing at VS2 in the Jr Outlaw division, with limited success. With growing pains, boys, and limited success in racing on her teenage mind, commitment to racing in 03 was doubtful. Kortnie’s mind changed after the May 24th race, when she lead the main and challenged the leader of the 125 hot shoes, Emalee Ramirez. Victory was just a few inches away, and Kornie’s heart was back in it. Starting on the pole, Bell made it look easy on a glass smooth speedway, surviving 3 yellow flag restarts. Mullins brought out the first yellow on lap 2 and 12. Jonathon Daniels, Travis Jolicoeur, and Kelvin Lewis battled for the runner up positions as Bell pulled away at each restart. Fifth starting Lewis, who has missed a couple of weeks, showed no signs of being off, as he took over the second position on lap 11. Eight starting Ramirez, worked her way through the field to take the third position on lap 15. Bell was long gone by then. At the checker the finish was K. Bell, Lewis, Ramirez, Joliceour, Keheley, Daniels, Braxton, Mullins. Speedway Division
A combined speedway kart competition fielded a season high of 9 competitors. Felicia Lopez, daughter of Alex Lopez, (who headed the famous San Jose Kart Club) returned to the speedway for the first time in 03. Felicia is a special Ed administrator for children with disabilities, and starting her own company. It has kept her away from the speedway in the first half of the season, but she will be here for the second half. The class of the field were the #1 car (who I do not have a name for on the sign in sheet) Brian Keltner, and Felicia Lopez. Joe Kaiser would have been in the fight also, except for a first lap spin, that took him the whole race to catch up, finally moving in the third position on lap 19. Keltner and Lopez were side by side for laps 10 through 17,
