Skate Against Hate and Violence Campaign

Rolls Through Southland Area

Every 92 Minutes, A Gun Kills A Child In America. Shooting Victim's Friends Mourn. Hate Crime Claims Another. These are headlines seen nearly every day in nearly every major newspaper and television news. The Skate Against Hate & Violence Campaign begun by D. Miles in 1979, is an effort to strongly raise awareness of the positive aspects inline skating can bring to the lives of youth and to give young people a fun, healthy alternative they can enjoy.

This may not end hate or violence in the street, but it can have an enormous impact in the minds of young people who will benefit from the social interaction and the physical conditioning skating will bring into their lives.

The campaign involves collecting used skates and the presentation of a 450 mile roadskate from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

THE SKATE AGAINST HATE & VIOLENCE ROADSKATE

The Skate Against Hate & Violence Roadskate is a 450 mile skate-a-thon that begins at San Francisco's City Hall and ends at the Kids Dental Kare offices in Hollywood. The event is a rolling anti-violence publicity campaign designed to roadskate will serve as a launch vehicle for the Skate Against Hate & Violence Campaign.

Working together as one unit is the focus of this event. There will be an R V. vehicles and a van supporting the skaters. The skaters will skate in front of the R V. We want to show comradery and working together to reach a common goal as an example to others.

GETTING SKATES TO THE KIDS

We are working with skate shops and other sponsors of the campaign to set up a situation where the public can bring in their old skates. They can be either blade skates or conventional rollerskates. These skates will be refurbished by replacing the wheels, bearings and laces. This will make the skates as good as new. The skates will be given to young people who can't afford skates during the Christmas season. This is very important as we feel that this is a way to let youth that can't afford a $200.00 pair of inline skates experience the joy skating.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

1. Skate from San Francisco to Los Angeles in 60 hours.

2. Generate positive press and media coverage promoting inline skating.

3. Use inline skating to make a strong statement against hate & violence.

4. Launch the Skate Against Hate & Violence Campaign.

5. Recognize Kids Dental Kare as the sponsor of the event and campaign.

6. Draw attention to the Dome Village Skate Park.

TIMING

The SAHV Campaign will begin on Sunday, October 10, 1999. Skates and other gifts will be collected until December 10.
