[Beeplant]

Beeplant / California Figwort
(Scrophularia californica)
Figwort (Scrophulariaceae) family
Perennial
Bloom time: approx. April - August

These Beeplants are 3 - 5 feet tall. Most of the Beeplants at Lobos are by the creek (which is fenced off because it's a water supply for the Presidio), but there are a few along the boardwalk before you reach the dunes. Some people prefer the California Figwort name because there are other plants called Beeplants.

Photos of the leaves and flower are below.

Beeplant leaf photograph The bluish-green leaves are triangular with large toothed edges. Since the flowers are so small, I usually spot this plant by the large pairs of leaves.

[Beeplant flower] The two upper petals stick out like an awning over the rest of the flower.  The color is a brownish-red, not particularly exciting to the human eye, but the flowers are attractive to bees. I had to wait some time before I could get a bee-less shot. The flower is small, perhaps 1/4th to 1/2 inch long.
