Lobos Creek Dunes and Valley
Wildflowers and Flowering Shrubs

[Buckwheat plant]

Coast Buckwheat
(Erigonum latifolium)
Buckwheat (Polygonaceae) family
Perennial
Bloom times: approx. April - June

The Coast Buckwheat's distinctive "lollypop-like" flowers start out as chalky white, turning pinkish as the season progresses and becoming a rusty brown by fall.

[Buckwheat in autumn] Its leaves are a dark green with a frosty white underside. The edges curl up a bit giving the leaf a slight white outline effect. As the leaves get older, they turn a reddish-brown making this one of the more colorful plants in the dunes.

The top photo was taken in June and the second photo was snapped in October of 1999.
