DivorceI do not cry, beloved, neither curse.Silence and strength, these two at least are good. God gave me sun and moon and all he could; But not a woman's love, for that is hers. That is a modified version of the first verse of a poem by G.K.Chesterton. Chesterton wrote "He" instead of "God" and "aught" instead of "all" but otherwise it is accurate, and relevant. He sealed her soul from sage and questioner:
Since our separation my wife has admitted more to me of her soul than she planned, she once said. We have seen and spoken with each other frequently. The ostensible reason we began to spend any time at all with each other is to share some of our son's "firsts" and, while occasionally uncomfortable, the time was well spent. We are now friends, good friends perhaps, though... I did not attempt to talk about reconciliation with her. But she raised the subject one evening when we were together, and said she did not think it would happen. I wish to honor her and remain on good terms as friends and coparents. I believe I can be a good friend. Now if only I could leave all the rest behind.... |
