My Appalachian Heritage

MY APPALACHIAN HERITAGE

I would like to begin this family site with thanks to those who contributed in my search for accurate family lore.  This information was initially gathered in 1980 while taking Appalachian Studies at West Virginia Wesleyan.  I hope to add to the original material as I go.

To my parents: who gave me an intense feeling of family while growing up.

To my MaMa Beckman: who added a sense of the historical.

To Roberta Knox: who provided me with much information which her mother, Mary Elizabeth Bird Martin, diligently gathered throughout her life.

To my Aunt Evelyn: who told me so much about her family life which my father either did not remember or had long forgotten.

To my Great grandma Bird: who left a diary in which she wrote her memories and thoughts while in a nursing home.

To Mrs. Nora S. Meade: who prepared a Meade family tree which helped rekindle my Aunt Evelyn and father's memories.

To Charlie Moore: who provided me with information about his father, mother, sisters and brother.

To Lillian Sturgille: who filled in the gaps of my father and aunt's memories.

Pictured:  Two unidentified Kentuckians found among my Papa Ferrell's photos (the shadow taking the picture sure looks like him).
