I feel
very fortunate to live in Macomb County Michigan. There is this organization
called C.A.R.E. Community Assessment Referral and Education. They have a
program for parents/family. They have volunteers that have been through the
program lead other parents through the program. The S.T.E.P. program I found
to be excellent. But I was not always that way. Let me tell you about my
first experience with the class.
My wife and I wanted to learn more about being parents. We had a 3 year old and a 1 year old. We had heard good things about this S.T.E.P. class from other people. We finally found a location and time that fit into our schedule. Even though I wanted to learn anything I could I realiazed that I was sitting there the first 2-3 nights in class with my arms crossed over and I was thinking "I am a good person who the He?? do you think you are telling me how to raise my kids." I realized about the 3rd week that the information there was just there more information choices in parenting looking at things differently then I did before. My wife and I took the class about 3 times with different leaders and then we took some of the additional or advanced classes. We enjoyed the information and was using it and saw some great benefits in using this new information to us in our parenting role. We latter became volunteers for the program and now my wife and I are leaders for other parents.
I know that there have been big debates over spanking. This program shows you alternatives that work! It is never to late to learn things that can help you and your cooperation and respect and communication with your children. This program really helps you in all aspects of life. The information you learn are life tools. Another reason I wanted to seek advice about parenting skills is that one time when my oldest was in diapers and did something wrong I went to swat his diaper. I know it didn't hurt it was just to get the attention of him when I said NO. He looked at me as I began to swat his bottom and gave me such a scared look. I wanted from that moment to learn additional way to discipline my kids because I do not want my kids to be afraid of me. I want them to feel comfortable in cumming to me to tell me there problems or ask advice. I know so many kids that do not seek this from there parents but from friends - gangs - drugs - and other places less desirable.
