Anawan Rock is a historical site on Route 44 in Rehoboth, in the Bridgewater Triangle. It is a large boulder in a wooded swamp where the Wampanoag Indian chief Anawan surrendered to the colonists during King Philip's War. Allegedly, the site is haunted by angry Indian ghosts. Area residents have reported seeing and smelling smoke in the area, although no other evidence of fire can be found. A couple visiting Anawan Rock allegedly saw a large bonfire at the rock's summit that vanished right before their eyes. Another tourist was allegedly scared away by a loud male voice yelling "Iootash, iootash!", which was later found to be an Algonquin term meaning "stand and fight". Two amateur ghost hunters recently captured a photo of the alleged ghostly smoke, which is visible as a mist or haze that was not visible when the photo was taken! "Boston- Charlesgate Hall, a dormitory of Emerson College in Boston's Back Bay district, has an old elevator that is haunted by a specter of a man in black with an injured arm. Students avoid the area. Blankets have been pulled off sleeping students at night by an unseen hand, and it is rumored that when Charlesgate Hall still belonged to Boston University, a suicide occurred there, and many residents belonged to a sinister cult of some time." (p.100)
"Lenox- Edith Wharton's mansion, at the intersection of Route 20 and Plunkett Street, is haunted by Wharton; her husband, Edward; and author Henry James, who was a frequent visitor. Their filmy apparitions are accompanied by noises. Also present is a sinister hooded figure who attacks people in bed and presses down upon them. After Wharton's death, the house was used as a girls' school, and girlish phantom laughter is heard." (p.101)
