Sojourner House's

Mission and Philosophy

Mission Statement

The mission of Sojourner House is to end domestic violence.

Until this is accomplished, we empower women in three ways: through our direct services, our community education programs, and our participation in the legislative and judicial systems.

  • Our direct services offer shelter, counseling, support, and advocacy for battered women and their children.
  • Our educational programs teach non-violent problem-solving skills, and bring to diverse communities a greater understanding of what causes, and what can prevent domestic violence.
  • We work with the judicial system to provide comprehensive legal support for victims of domestic abuse, and with the legislature to ensure protection by the law.

It is our conviction that every woman, man, and child has the right to live in an environment free from physical, sexual, and emotional abuse.

Philosophy Statement

Sojourner House, Inc. is an agency organized to serve battered women and their children. We embrace respect, compassion, fairness, and equality in carrying out our mission. Our philosophy includes the following:

  • We believe that everyone has a right to live and work in an environment free from abuse of any sort. In keeping with this conviction, we strive to operate a mutually supportive and non-exploitable workplace.
  • We believe that domestic violence is rooted in a social attitude that violence is acceptable, a culture that devalues women, and a society structured by exploitation.
  • In the conviction that individual empowerment and social change go hand-in-hand, we work toward achieving both goals. By embracing the concept of self-empowerment, we encourage all women to realize their potential to control their own lives.
  • We value the strengths inherent in diversity of cultures, lifestyles, and ideas.

Sojourner House is a member agency of the United Way of Southeastern New England. Our donor option number is #5960
