on the turnpike, there's a ballet being fought out in the alley." The opera here refers to performances at the Garden State (a.k.a. PNC Bank) Arts Center. Springsteen once lived close to the venue and thus could literally hear the opera out on the turnpike. He utilized a bit of artistic license because it was really the Garden State Parkway. |
