Ocean Grove Map

oceangrove

One beach town south of Asbury Park. Hometown of Southside Johnny (Lyon) who once worked for the U.S. Postal Service here. Probably the most unique town on the Jersey Shore. You step back in time when entering this mile-square enclave that has principles deeply rooted in strict Methodist traditions. Until the early 1980s, cars were prohibited from entering the town on Sunday. Even today the beaches don't open until after 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Yet at the same time, existing right alongside the religious community is a flourishing community of "freethinkers," gays and lesbians, and artsy types. It's been said that "only fruits and nuts live in Ocean Grove."

The 7,000 seat Great Auditorium, constructed in 1894, actually has a larger seating capacity than the Asbury Park Convention Hall/Paramount Theatre combined.
