Sophia Garden is a community-supported agricultural (CSA) mission of the Sisters of St. Dominic, providing organically grown vegetables to garden members and needy families in the community. CSA members share responsibility with the farmer for the cost and success of the garden. In return they share in the bounty of the harvest. At Sophia, we get an abundance of wonderful vegetables. We also get our hands dirty harvesting carrots, pulling out weed, turning the compost pile, helping the farmer however we can. We bring along spouses, kids, parents, partners and friends. We have parties and share recipes, publish newsletters and organize fundraisers. Many of us find we benefit from the garden in ways we never expected.

Through the Learning Center, adults learn about "the importance of healthy school lunches,” “cooking for babies and children,” “how to prepare healthy meals amid a busy lifestyle,” “understanding genetically modified foods,” as well as a variety of cooking, bread-baking and food preservation classes. We educate children about composting, planting seeds, weeding and harvesting to help them understand the meaning and process of bringing food to the table.

The garden has a rich agricultural and spiritual legacy. The Dominican Sisters of the Holy Cross have lived on this land since 1875 and farmed it for much of that time. The land was once used to help feed children orphaned by poverty and the Civil War. The garden is named in honor of a special Dominican sister named Sophia who loved the earth and lived her life caring for it. Sophia is also the name given in the scriptures to the feminine face of God, the incarnation of wisdom. The work of the farm connects us to that wisdom.

"Sophia Garden & Learning Center is committed to modeling a new relationship with the earth and the food people eat – a relationship which recognizes that the human and natural world are one sacred community. We have been disconnected from the earth - the garden is about getting reconnected.” - Sister Jeanne Clark
