The Write Stuff!
Norwell students take honors in sports writing contest.

Will McDonough may be gone, but his spirit is alive and well.
On Sunday, 18 students, including two from Norwell, took home awards in the
2006 Will McDonough Writing Contest sponsored by the Boston Globe. There
were over 4,000 entries submitted.

Officials from the Sports Museum and TD Banknorth Garden, who presented and
judged the annual contest, handed out specialized plaques along with $100
savings bonds to two students from each grade level 4-12, and treated them
to a day at the Garden that included a lunch hosted by McDonough's son,
Sean, and complimentary seats for the day's Boston Celtics game against the
New York Knicks.

Seventh-grader Dylan Cleary of Norwell Middle School, received honor for
his essay about their favorite sports figures.
Cleary, an avid hockey fan, said his piece highlighted the career of former
professional hockey goalie Jacques "Jake the Snake" Plante.
Though by no stretch of the imagination the greatest goalie of all time,
his contributions to the way the position is played and understood today
are second to none. Plante is widely credited as the first goalie to skate
behind the net to retrieve the puck, and the first to regularly indicate
"icing" calls to his teammates.

Plante, who played most of his career with the Montreal Canadiens, is
also credited with making popular the use of the goalie mask. In 1959,
Plante took a slapshot from New York Rangers center Andy Bathgate. He
received several stitches, and returned to the ice wearing a mask. Though
his coach, Tom Blake, was furious about his new headgear, Plante and the
Canadiens went on an 18-game winning streak. The streak was snapped when
Blake ordered Plante to play without the mask. The next night, Plante was
allowed to wear the mask again. In subsequent years, Plante began designing
his own mask, and taking requests for masks from other goalies in the league.
Himself a goaltender with the South Shore Seahawks youth hockey team,
Cleary said reading about Plante's style of play has had a dramatic effect
on how he approaches the game.
I think its one of the toughest positions, because you're the last line of
defense for your team," Cleary said. "What I learned from reading about
Plante is that your style of play has to be very efficient."

The Boston Globe and the Sports Museum at TD Banknorth Garden began presenting Will McDonough Writing Contest following the famed sports writer's passing in 2003. McDonough, widely accepted as one of the finest and most accurate sports journalists in history, is commonly remembered as a driving force behind the legitimization of the American Football League, of which the New England Patriots (then the Boston Patriots) were a member, and it's eventual merge into the National Football League.

Jimmy Smith Memorial

Champions!

Martha's Vineyard

Although they had the second best record after the round robin phase of the tournament, the Seahawks C2 squirts were able to squeak out a 5-4 victory against the Seahawks Squirts C1 team in the championship game. During the round robin phase the C2 squad bested two Martha's Vineyard teams and lost a hotly contested game, 6-4, to the Seahawks C1 team. This set the stage for the Sunday morning championship game pitting Seahawk against Seahawk.

With a blizzard raging outside, some hard fought hockey raged inside the Martha's Vineyard Arena. The C2 team climbed back from an early 2-0 deficit with the lead changing 4 times in the third period. Goalie PJ Kent made some key saves for the C2 team which kept his team within striking distance. The game was finally decided with 26 seconds left in the game as John Poirier scored during a scramble in front of the C1 net.

Overall it was a great weekend of hockey and camaraderie for all of the players and parents.
