 South Shore Seahawks
Tryout Strategy

The objective of the South Shore Seahawks program is to provide tryouts that are fair and balanced to everyone involved. The purpose of this document is to explain how the tryouts will be run and how players will be placed on teams. While there is no exact science on rating and placing players, we feel that the following description will help all the Seahawks' members understand how it's done. By running the tryouts in this manner, the majority of players will be placed on the proper teams. We understand that some players tryout well and others don't, while some players that don't tryout well, may have intangible attributes that make them good hockey players. We also understand that at the higher levels, players may be trying out for positions, i.e. forward or defense.

The first session of tryouts will be the A team tryouts. We ask that unless you sincerely feel your son or daughter belongs on an A team, not to tryout for the A team. Their chances of making a B team are not increased by trying out for the A's. After the first skills session there will be an effort to choose up to 8 obvious A's and eliminate the obvious non-A's. This session may or may not accomplish this. The next A session will be an invitation only scrimmage to identify the remaining players to fill the team to 13 players. When the head coach is selected, the coach will have the option of selecting the remaining three spots from the next ten rated players*. If he elects not to do so, the next three rated players will be selected for the A team. The remaining seven players from those ten will be invited to the B tryout.

The next tryout skills session(s) will be for the B and C players. These sessions will determine how many players will be invited to the B tryouts. They will also determine the rankings for the C drafts.

The final session of tryouts will be the B scrimmages, which are by invitation only. Players will be evaluated the same as the A tryouts and placed on the B team(s) in the same manner.

Coaches will be chosen after players are placed at the A, B and C levels.

A checking clinic will be scheduled for all first year Peewees and first year Seahawks that are Bantams or Peewees which is mandatory for attending tryouts for those players.

Each tryout session will be run by the Level Directors, who will choose at least five judges. The judges must be past or present Seahawks coaches or hockey qualified Seahawks members. If there is a child of a judge on the ice, he will not be permitted to judge him or her.

After tryout sessions, the Seahawks Level Directors will be utilizing the website http://members.aol.com/ssseahawks, to notify players of their next sessions. Each Level Director will issue instructions to look for the players names which will indicate which tryout session to attend next as well as possible instructions as in, "If you don't see your name, you've made (a certain) team."

* A player who is in the Coach's pick pool and is not a returning Seahawk cannot be picked over a higher-ranked current Seahawk player who is also in the pool. For example, Player A (a returning Seahawk) is ranked 2nd in the Coach's pick pool. Player B (who did not play with the Seahawks last year) is ranked 3rd in the pool. The coach may not select Player B over Player A. The intention of this rule is to prohibit coaches from recruiting outside the Seahawks organization and selecting players over returning Seahawks players.

********************

Dear Midget Level Hockey Parent and Player,

Ages 1991- 1988

Greetings, we appreciate your patience as we worked to determine our strategy for the Seahawks’ 2006-2007 Midget program. Over the last few years, the Seahawks have grown from a single Midget team to four Midget teams last season and four this coming season. This letter will explain the Seahawks’ strategy and the various Midget options.

MIDGET ORGANIZATION

The Midget level consists of 3 brackets of play and teams. The Seahawks are planning to skate a total of Four Teams.

Midget A 1/2 Season
Midget B 1/2 Season
Midget B Full Season

We ask that you read all of the information provided in this letter carefully, unlike any level of hockey up to this point, Midgets carry a four year range in age. This can and does result in 15 year olds who played Bantam last season skating against 18-year-old High School Varsity players. There is a significant jump in the level of play, and the game can be much more physical.

Below is a more detailed description of how the various Midget Teams are aligned:

Midget A Team -1/2 Season

This level is geared to the strong (First or Second line) High School Varsity player. The season ends before the High School season begins. Players trying out for this team should have had strong success at the High School Varsity level, or have been a leading player on a JV High School or Midget B ½ season team. Bantam A players who are serious Varsity candidates and comfortable with physical play may also fit at this level. Any player that try’s out and does not make this level has the option to play at B level, subject to available spots.

Midget B Team - 1/2 season

This level is geared to the existing High School Junior Varsity player and some Varsity Players. The season ends before the High School season begins. Players who hope to make a varsity program should sign up for this team. This is a higher level of “B” hockey than has been played at younger ages, and can also be very physical.

Midget B Team – Full Season

This level is geared to the potential High School Junior Varsity player and players who will not play for a high school but wish to continue playing. The season continues through the High School season until April. A player who makes a HS Junior Varsity Team would continue to play on this team during the JV Season . The benefit of playing the full season Midget B team would be the extra practice and games during the JV team season.

Other facts about midgets you need to know:

Teams can have up to 18 players; and teams will carry up to 2 goalies; Total 20 players

Teams can practice at 9:40PM and 9:00PM hours; Friday at 9PM is possibility although Seahawks will try to avoid.

If Players “fight” they are subject to 6 games suspension which for the ½ season teams is 1./2 the season

The Seahawks skated 2 A level and 1 B level half season teams last year. One comprised of the top 18 players. The second consisting of developmental A players. The decision to enter the second A team was based on the available talent and the desire to see how this second team could compete at the A level.

Though many games were 1 goal losses, the developmental team finished 0-11-1. As the season progressed team morale diminished and this affected player attendance on weekend night games.

After discussions with the Midget coaching staff, it was agreed that the program would be better served with two equally balance B teams. It is very likely that A level players from last season will be on B teams this coming season.

Seahawks 2006 – 2007 Midget Program

The Seahawks will skate one Midget ½ Season A team, 2 Midget ½ Season B teams, and 1 Midget Full Season team

There will be an open tryout for the A Level team. Players from last year’s team are required to skate the tryout in order to be eligible for the A team.

Any players wishing to try out for the A level teams MUST reply to the email by (within 5 days). This will enable us to determine ice requirements and the most effective process. Our goal is to model the process on last year’s Midget tryouts.

Candidates will be informed via e-mail of the tryout date (s) and location (s).

Thank you,

Mark Donovan
Asst. Midget Level Director
South Shore Seahawks
