Society of Australasian Specialists/ Oceania

The Society of Australasian Specialists was founded in July 1936 by a small group of collectors interested in Australasian philately. In 1965, the American Society of Australian Philatelists, later to become Oceania, Inc. was established for the same purpose as the older SAS. In 1978, the two Societies consolidated to better serve the members of both organizations. Today, the Society has many members, not only in the United States and Canada, but also in New Zealand, Australia, Great Britain, and a few other countries.

SAS/Oceania is incorporated as a non-profit organization, whose purpose are to promote, publicize, encourage, and extend the study and collection of philatelic material of those Pacific Ocean lands mainly south of the Tropic of Cancer. The area includes Australia, New Zealand, their dependencies, and all the Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia (except Hawaii). The Society is an affiliate member of the American Philatelic Society, Unit #22

SAS/O is an international organization who welcomes collectors at all levels of philatelic experience. While our name includes the word "Specialists", this does not mean that one has have specialized knowledge. Rather we ask that members have a desire to increase their philatelic knowledge and continue to learn about their collecting interests. Many of our current members are considered knowledgeable in their collecting areas and freely give of their time and knowledge to other members who are just starting on their quest for greater philatelic knowledge. Fellow members have become specialists in all fields of philately, including stamp issues, postal stationary, fiscal uses and postal history.
