HOME MADE DOG FOOD
Subject: Sunny's Miracle Diet Revised 08/98
3 lbs ground turkey
3 cups brown rice
1 cup white rice
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
11 cups water (more water can be added if necessary - and may well be needed)
Put all above in cold water, break up turkey thoroughly, bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat to low and cook 45 minutes.
Add 1 bag mixed vegetables and 1 bag chopped broccoli,
stir in thoroughly, cover and cook for about 5 minutes.
Add 1 cup (1/4 cup at a time until all water is absorbed) of regular oatmeal
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Use oatmeal to make the food the right consistency. Doesn't need to really "cook" either. The heat from the rice and etc. will make it edible. Put in containers and refrigerate. It will keep at least a week in the refrigerator.
As to how much water to use. I usually begin with about 10 cups and may add more if needed. This recipe makes one of the very large stew pots FULL. If you wanted to make the food twice a week, you could make smaller recipes.
Sometimes I substitute more oatmeal for the rice just to change the food a bit. About every 6th time I make it, I substitute the HIGHEST GRADE ground beef for the ground turkey - just for a change.
And Sunny gets a boiled egg chopped up in her food a couple of times per week. We also mix 1/4 cup of no fat cottage cheese with her food a couple of times a week.
The amount made by this recipe should last about a week for a 15 lb. dog, maybe longer. In the beginning, when Sunny's system was really starved from having been on food she couldn't "use" , she ate this much every four to five days.
When we feed her, we give her as much as she wants and will eat in about half an hour. We adjust the amount as necessary. If she's off her "feed" which seldom occurs, we put it in the microwave for a minute which seems to stimulate her appetite.
Put the supplements on the top, stir it up good and they'll gobble it up. Offer any left overs a little later time since it will have the "medicine in it.
There is nothing magical about the exact amounts. I am going to experiment
with other grains from the health food store as soon as I get time.
Good luck!!!
